Autonomic nervous system abnormalities may indeed underlie bronchial hyperreactivity. Imbalances between excitatory (parasympathetic, alpha-adrenergic and noncholinergic excitatory) and inhibitory (beta-adrenergic and non-adrenergic inhibitory) nervous systems at one or more loci could lead to airway hyperreactivity.
