The neurological and neuroradiological manifestations of pediatric achondroplasia are analyzed on the basis of 10 cases. In addition to the classical symptomatology of an enlarging head, with or without increased intracranial pressure, several patients presented symptoms related to a small foramen magnum. Respiratory problems and quadriparesis were also observed in these patients. Six patients who were treated by foramen magnum decompression showed remarkable improvement. Neuroradiological…
Early detection of neurological manifestations in achondroplasia
TLDR
It is concluded that the neurological manifestations of pediatric patients with ACh are frequent and very important, demanding comprehensive clinical evaluation even in asymptomatic patients, especially those with severe hypotonia or SSER alterations.
Hydrocephalus in achondroplasia: the possible role of intracranial venous hypertension.
TLDR
It is concluded from these studies that ventriculomegaly in achondroplastic children represents hydrocephalus, which is likely secondary to raised intracranial venous pressure due to hemodynamically significant stenosis of the jugular foramen and, in some cases, thejugular vein in the thoracic aperture.
Communicating hydrocephalus, basilar invagination, and other neurologic features in osteogenesis imperfecta
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is anecdotally associated with macrocephaly, hydrocephalus, basilar invagination, and cerebral atrophy, but the frequency and the spectrum of neurologic features of this
Neuroradiological Work-up of Achondroplasia
TLDR
There is now considerable evidence that intracranial venous sinus hypertension, secondary to narrowing of the jugular foramina, plays a major role in the genesis of hydrocephalus in achondroplastic patients.
Neurologic manifestations of achondroplasia.
Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in hydrocephalus associated with achondroplasia.
TLDR
It is postulated that the increase in intracranial venous pressure resulting from jugular foramen stenosis may lead to disproportionate venous engorgement of the cerebellum and some degree of obstructive hydrocephalus amenable to ETV.
Predictors of cervical myelopathy and hydrocephalus in young children with achondroplasia
TLDR
‘Cord constriction ratio’ for cervical myelopathy and ’Frontal horn width’ and ‘Posterior indentation’ grade for hydrocephalus were significant predictors and may be used as useful parameters for management.

TLDR
This study points out the narrowing of the sagittal and transverse diameters at the foramen magnum seen on MR images and better defined on CT scans in children with achondroplasia.
Neurosurgical implications of achondroplasia.
TLDR
A historical perspective on the evolution of treatment of pediatric patients with achondroplasia is provided and the use of CSF diversion procedures, formerly fraught with complications, is now rare following the realization of the natural history ofCSF space enlargement in these patients.

NEUROLOGICAL SYMPTOMS IN ACHONDROPLASIA
TLDR
Neurological symptoms in achondroplasia are described and discussed on the basis of two cases and a rapidly progressive bilateral lumbosacral rhizopathy developed at the age of 50 years, and oil myelography showed a total lumbar block.
Neurological abnormalities in achondroplastic children.

TLDR
The role played by congenital malformations of the skull and spine in the production of lesions of the central nervous system has been increasingly appreciated in recent years and attention is drawn to the possible effects on the nervous system of achondroplasia.
Megalencephaly in infants and children. The possible role of increased dural sinus pressure.
TLDR
Benign intracranial hypertension and the type of megalencephaly demonstrated by the patients appear to develop similarly except that the presence of open cranial sutures may allow a transient nonhydrostatic loading of brain parenchyma in infants, resulting in mild, nonprogressive macrocephaly.
Compression of Spinal Cord and Cauda Equina in Achondroplastic Dwarfs
TLDR
The recent experience in observing and treating an achondroplastic girl, 15 years of age with symptoms of a progressive myeloradiculopathy in the upper lumbar region of the spine, will be described.
Lesions of the spinal cord (transverse myelopathy) in achondroplasia.
TLDR
The etiologic relation between the basic developmental disorder and the neurologic syndrome is demonstrated and means of preventing or curing this incapacitating condition are pointed out.
Hydrocephalus caused by increased intracranial venous pressure: A clinicopathological study
A child developed progressive communicating nonobstructive hydrocephalus as a result of increased intracranial venous pressure. The child had been treated for congenital heart disease at age 3 weeks
Achondroplasia and hydrocephalus
Nine achondroplastic dwarfs were studied with computerized tomography, skull and cervical spine films, and psychometric testing. All had large ventricles that ranged from the top limits of normal to
Hydrocephalus resulting from superior vena cava thrombosis in an infant. Case report.
TLDR
The authors report an unusual case of superior vena cava thrombosis in an infant who subsequently developed communicating hydrocephalus; they also review previously reported cases of dural sinus hypertension, and separate patients into two groups that tend to have generalized increase in intracranial venous pressure.
Neurological symptoms in achondroplastic dwarfs--surgical treatment.
TLDR
Four types of neurological patterns emerged, based on the onset, symptoms, and physical examination, and some etiological correlation between the anatomical lesion and the result was made in each category, and a reliable prognosis related to the pattern is now possible.
