Mammals control the volume and osmolality of their body fluids from stimuli that arise from both the intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments. These stimuli are sensed by two kinds of receptors: osmoreceptor-Na+ receptors and volume or pressure receptors. This information is conveyed to specific areas of the central nervous system responsible for an integrated response, which depends on the integrity of the anteroventral region of the third ventricle, e.g., organum vasculosum of the…

The central nervous system, especially the anteroventral portion of the third ventricle (AV3V), plays an important role in atrial secretion of ANP in response to BVE and causes the secretion of oxytocin and other hormones from the neurohypophysis.

Central actions of glucocorticoids in the control of body fluid homeostasis: review.
- Biology, MedicineBrazilian journal of medical and biological research = Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas

The data presented here suggest that glucocorticoids are not only involved in the mechanisms underlying the fast release but also in the transcriptional events that lead to decreased synthesis and secretion of these neuropeptides, particularly oxytocin, under diverse experimental conditions of altered fluid volume and tonicity.

Intracacellular recordings in hypothalamic explants have shown that changes in electrical activity are associated with proportional changes in the frequency of glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic potentials derived from osmosensitive OVLT neurons, suggesting that these mechanisms may participate in the osmotic regulation of neurohypophysial hormone release in situ.
