The seeds and one to three years old plants of Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) were analyzed for their free amino acid contents. The neuro-excitatory beta-ODAP (beta-N-oxalyl-L-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid), suggested to be the cause of the crippling neurolathyrism, was the major component in the seed extract (70% of the total free amino acids detected) and showed the highest concentration (0.43% by wt) compared to that in the different parts of young plants. beta-ODAP…
The contents of the neuro-excitatory amino acid β-ODAP (β-N-oxalyl-l-α,β-diaminopropionic acid), and other free and protein amino acids in the seeds of different genotypes of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.).
TLDR
The free and protein amino acids of nine different genotypes of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) seeds were analysed by HPLC with pre-column PITC (phenyl isothiocyanate) derivatisation and homoarginine was quantitatively the most important and stable while the neuro-excitatory amino acid β-ODAP showed highest variation.
Comparative study of the free amino acid compositions and contents in three different botanical origins of Coptis herb
TLDR
It was found that the major amino acids (Asn, Arg, and γ-aminobutyric acid) were significantly more in C. chinensis than in the other two species and suggested that free amino acids as active ingredients can be used to identify Coptis herb species.
Detection and distribution of arginine derivatives in Panax quinquefolius L and investigations of their antioxidant properties
Abstract Arginyl-fructose (AF) and arginyl-fructosyl-glucose (AFG) are products of the Maillard reaction between arginine and reducing sugars during the thermal treatment of Asian ginseng ( Panax

A neuroexcitatory non-protein amino acid, β-N-oxalyl-L-α,β-diaminopropionic acid (β-ODAP), present in the seeds of the hardy legume crop grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.), was considered responsible
Integrated evaluation of malonyl ginsenosides, amino acids and polysaccharides in fresh and processed ginseng.
TLDR
The contents of malonyl ginsenosides, amino acids, and polysaccharides, based on decreasing order, ranked as follows: fresh ginseng>frozen gINSeng>white ginseneng>stoved ginsEng>red gins Eng>black ginsENG.
The effect of steaming on the free amino acid contents and antioxidant activity of Panax ginseng
Abstract This study was carried out to investigate changes in the free amino acid contents and antioxidant activity of Panax ginseng induced by steaming at different temperatures. For this purpose,
Anti-oxidant Activity of Oil Extracted from Ginseng Seed
TLDR
Results show that ginseng seed oil is expected to preserve from ROS-induced membrane damage and may be utilized as an antioxidant functional material in cosmetics and nutricosmetics fields.
Free Amino Acid and Reducing Sugar Composition of Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) Leaves
Pandan leaves are commonly used to flavor desserts in Southeast Asia. The key aroma compound in pandan, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (ACPY), probably forms through Strecker degradation during cooking. This
Growth and bioactive phytochemicals of Panax ginseng sprouts grown in an aeroponic system using plasma-treated water as the nitrogen source
TLDR
An in-situ system for N-containing water production using plasma technology is established and the effects of the PTW on ginseng growth and its bioactive phytochemicals compared with those of an untreated control are evaluated.
Analysis of Amino Acids in Ginseng
Aiming to provide data and reference on illustrating the kinds and the contents of amino acids in ginseng, the analysis of amino acids was carried out. The dried ginseng was taken as the test sample.

Isolation and properties of arginase from a shade plant, ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) roots.
TLDR
Specific activities of the enzyme in sliced ginseng roots were increased by plant hormones such as GA(3), IAA, kinetin and putrescine, whereas the Activities of the purified enzyme were unaffected by putres cine, suggesting increases in arginase activities by these plant hormones could affect metabolism of polyamine intracellularly.
In vitro toxicological investigations of isoxazolinone amino acids of Lathyrus sativus.
TLDR
The results suggest that Lathyrus sativus plants engineered to block the synthesis of beta- ODAP may accumulate a neurotoxic precursor and therefore must be tested for the presence of both BIA and beta-ODAP.
Reduction efficiency of the neurotoxin β‐ODAP in low‐toxin varieties of Lathyrus sativus seeds by solid state fermentation with Aspergillus oryzae and Rhizopus microsporus var chinensis
TLDR
Solid state fermentation of several low-toxin varieties of grass pea seeds with Aspergillus oryzae and Rhizopus microsporus var chinensis removed the neurotoxin β-ODAP to a considerable degree from the seed meal, and those of other free protein amino acids increased dramatically in the fermented seeds.
From soil to brain: zinc deficiency increases the neurotoxicity of Lathyrus sativus and may affect the susceptibility for the motorneurone disease neurolathyrism.
TLDR
Soils, depleted in micronutrients from flooding by monsoon rains or otherwise poor in available zinc and with high iron content (Ethiopian vertisols), may be responsible for higher incidence of human lathyrism, one of the oldest neurotoxic diseases known to man.
Medicinal Plant Extracts for the Treatment of Dementia
TLDR
Current available data indicate galantamine to be well tolerated in the long term, with a relative lack of toxicity at clinically effective dosages, and future development of effective novel therapeutic strategies for dementia may benefit from the combination of conventional Western medical science and traditional Oriental medical practices.
Differential effect of β-N-oxalylamino-l-alanine, the Lathyrus sativus neurotoxin, and (±)-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate on the excitatory amino acid and taurine levels in the brain of freely moving rats
TLDR
It is suggested that β-oxalylamino- l -alanine increases the level of glutamate in vivo by a mechanism not connected to its effect on the non-NMDA receptors, which might involve the inhibition of glutamate transport.
Nitric oxide is involved in the immunomodulating activities of acidic polysaccharide from Panax ginseng.
TLDR
Results suggest that the immunomodulating activities of the acidic polysaccharide were mediated by the production of nitric oxide.
Antidiabetic effects of Panax ginseng berry extract and the identification of an effective component.
TLDR
Antihyperglycemic and anti-obese effects of Panax ginseng berry extract and its major constituent, ginsenoside Re, in obese diabetic C57BL/6J ob/ ob mice and their lean littermates were evaluated, suggesting that other constituents in the extract have distinct pharmacological mechanisms on energy metabolism.
Gliotoxic properties of theLathyrus excitotoxinβ-N-oxalyl-l-α,β-diaminopropionic acid (β-l-ODAP)
TLDR
The results suggest that the overall impact of the toxin on the CNS may represent the cumulative action of β- l -ODAP at a number of distinct points on both neurons and astrocytes.
