Nest Parasitism in Goldeneyes Bucephala clangula: Some Evolutionary Aspects
@article{Andersson1982NestPI, title={Nest Parasitism in Goldeneyes Bucephala clangula: Some Evolutionary Aspects}, author={Malte Andersson}, journal={The American Naturalist}, year={1982}, volume={120}, pages={1 - 16} }
Intraspecific nest parasitism, in which parasitic females lay eggs in the nests of host females of the same species, occurs in many birds and certain insects. Most known cases concern waterfowl (Anatidae). We examined host responses to experimental parasitism, adding eggs to nests of laying goldeneye ducks. Three different hypotheses on host responses yield mutually exclusive predictions. (1) The host is a determinate layer; her own clutch is unaffected by the number of parasitic eggs. (2) The…

Brood parasitism and cooperative nesting in the moorhen, Gallinula chloropus
- BiologyBehavioral Ecology and Sociobiology
- 2004
During a two year study of the moorhen, Gallinula chloropus, a quarter of the nests found had two or more females laying in them, and four hypotheses that explain why hosts accepted dumped eggs are considered were not supported by the data.
Brood parasitism, female condition and clutch reduction in the common eider Somateria mollisima
- Biology
- 2011
Meta-analysis of this and 3 other eider studies shows that there is a cost of being parasitised in this precocial species: host females laid on average 7% fewer eggs than other females, and there was no evidence of low condition in parasites.
Is Nest Parasitism Always Deleterious to Goldeneyes?
- BiologyThe American Naturalist
- 1985
Data on interspecific nest parasitism of common goldeneyes by hooded mergansers, Lophodytes cucullatus, are presented, which indicate that nest Parasitism is not necessarily disadvantageous to the host and the possibility that hosts with precocial young may occasionally benefit from being parasitized is considered.
Intraspecific nest parasitism in Red-breasted Mergansers
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 1988
This study studied intraspecific nest parasitism in an island nesting population of Red-breasted Mergansers in New Brunswick and found that a greater percentage of eggs hatched from parasitized nests during the peak nesting period than from normal nests.

Frequency, timing and costs of intraspecific nest parasitism in the common eider
- Biology
- 1992
Intraspecific nest parasitism was studied in the Hudson Bay race of the Common Eider, near Churchill, Manitoba, and it was determined that 42.4% of completed clutches were parasitized.
A new form of reproductive parasitism in cliff swallows
- BiologyNature
- 1988
It is discovered that colonial cliff swallows (Hirundo pyrrhonota) not only lay eggs in other individuals' nests, but also physically transfer eggs between nests after the eggs are laid.
Conspecific Brood Parasitism and Host Clutch Size in Common Pochards Aythya ferina
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 2013
A significant negative correlation between the number of parasitic eggs within a clutch and the timing of breeding is found and implies that cost of excessive parasitism might cause clutch size adjustment in the host but other possible explanations are discussed.

Low host recognition tendency revealed by experimentally induced parasitic egg laying in the common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula)
- Biology
- 2003
A field experiment was performed to address the accuracy of host recognition by parasites in the common goldeneye, a cavity-nesting duck, and found that Parasitic egg laying in the experimental nests was not constrained by the lack of contemporarily available nests that had a host.

The Ecology of Brood Parasitism in Birds

Counterparts of the cuckoos are known among insects, of which several groups are specialized for interactions with social insects, ranging from facultative commensalism to an inquilinism close to the cucksoo nexus.

A negative correlation between temperature and laying date was found, while the yearly variations of the laying date did not influence the proportion of breeding adults, clutch size or hatching success.
An Experimental and Teleonomic Investigation of Avian Brood Parasitism
- Biology
- 1975
Avian brood parasitism, the phenomenon in which certain birds, the parasites, deposit their eggs in the nests of other birds, their hosts, is especially well suited to teleonomic studies since it provides a system in which the presence or absence of relatively obvious adaptations can be examined in two interacting genetic lineages.
EVOLUTION OF BROOD PARASITISM IN ALTRICIAL BIRDS
- Biology
- 1965
Brood parasitism has evolved independently in African weaver birds (Ploceidae) and in several species of blackbirds (Icteridae), and the independent evolution of brood parasitism in these diverse phyletic lines is clear.

Breeding of ducks at Loch Leven, Kinross.
- Environmental Science
- 1975
Hatching success in surface-feeding ducks at Loch Leven was reduced by the disturbance, which caused females to expose their nests to predators, and was attributed at least partly to a seasonal change in the behaviour of the ducks themselves.
