SYNOPSIS The advantages are discussed of defining the instars of insects by reference to the apolyses rather than to the ecdyses, and an attempt is made to answer the objections to this practice published by V. B. Wigglesworth in the previous issue of this journal. The consequences of confusing the pharate pupa with the larva and the pupa with the pharate adult are also discussed.
