The 2013 Australian Federal Election Campaign was intensely negative (Holmes, 2014). While much has been written on the prevalence and effects of negative campaigning (Iyengar and Simon, 2000; Ansolabehere and Iyengar, 1995), there has been little work on how negativity is constructed.
