Abstract This study examined whether processing of emotional words impairs cognitive performance in acutely ill patients with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD), with or without comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), relative to healthy controls (HC). Forty youths with PBD without ADHD, 20 youths with PBD and ADHD, and 29 HC (mean age = 12.97 ± 3.13) performed a Synonym Matching task, where they decided which of two probe words was the synonym of a target word. The three words…

Differences in Real World Executive Function between Children with Pediatric Bipolar Disorder and Children with ADHD.
TLDR
The two PBD groups showed greater impairment than the ADHD group in the domains of Inhibition, Shifting, Monitoring and Emotional Control, and regression analyses suggest cognitive predictors of EF impairment in ADHD and mood predictors for inhibition in PBD.
Executive Function in Adolescent Bipolar Disorder With and Without ADHD Comorbidity
Background: In adolescents with bipolar disorder (ABD) a profile of mood dysregulation, impulsivity and poor cognitive control has been associated with poor executive function. However the underlying
A Preliminary Study on the Functional Benefits of Computerized Working Memory Training in Children With Pediatric Bipolar Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
TLDR
The present findings suggest that working memory training is beneficial not only in youths with ADHD but also in youngsters with PBD, and there is evidence of near and far transfer of WM improvement in these patients, although in different ways for the two patient groups.
Differentiating Between Comorbidity and Symptom Overlap in ADHD and Early Onset Bipolar Disorder
TLDR
The two ADHD-C groups displayed neuropsychological impairments that were not found in the BD group in spite of subjective and questionnaire-rated inattention, and the findings caution against over-diagnosis of ADHD in BD.
Disconnection Between Amygdala and Medial Prefrontal Cortex in Psychotic Disorders.
TLDR
Findings provide support for the specificity and clinical utility of amygdala-MPFC functional connectivity as a potential neural marker of SCZ and correlation with deficit syndrome and real-world functioning is examined.

Adult ADHD in Bipolar and Related Disorders
TLDR
Bipolar Disorder was the fifth leading cause of DALYs in 2013, accounting for the 5.7% of the burden due to mental disorders and substance use disorders.

Differential engagement of cognitive and affective neural systems in pediatric bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
TLDR
During cognitive control of emotion processing, PBD patients deployed the VLPFC to a greater extent than HC, and the ADHD patients showed decreased V LPFC engagement relative to both HC and PBD Patients.
Deficits in Attention to Emotional Stimuli Distinguish Youth with Severe Mood Dysregulation from Youth with Bipolar Disorder
TLDR
Between-group analyses indicated that SMD subjects had significantly reduced attention interference from emotional distracters relative to BD and control subjects, indicating that attention in SMD youth was not modulated by emotional stimuli.
Neural correlates of response inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Neural correlates of response inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder.
TLDR
During accurate NoGo but impaired Go trial performance, children with bipolar I or II disorder showed increased right DLPFC activation versus controls, suggesting increased recruitment of executive control regions for accurate response inhibition.
Emotion processing influences working memory circuits in pediatric bipolar disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Impact of ADHD on the Neurocognitive Functioning of Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder
Negative emotion impairs working memory in pediatric patients with bipolar disorder type I
TLDR
BD patients performed significantly more poorly when identifying the intensity of happy and angry expressions on the Chicago PEAT, and demonstrated working-memory impairments regardless of the type of facial emotional stimuli.
Comorbid ADHD is associated with altered patterns of neuronal activation in adolescents with bipolar disorder performing a simple attention task.
TLDR
The pattern of differences suggests that bipolar adolescents with comorbid ADHD demonstrate decreased activation of prefrontal regions, compared with bipolar adolescents without ADHD, and preferentially recruit portions of posterior parietal and temporal cortex.
