Free radical, graft copolymerization of water-soluble monomers onto Kraft, pine lignin produces a natural backgone, graft polymer which functions as a thickening or dispersing agent in water-base, bentonite drilling muds. The complex polymers formed by reacting lignin, calcium chloride, a hydroperoxide, and ethene monomers in anerobic solvent have the structures given in this paper.
