Wood boring insects collected around bait logs of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were 45 species from 4 families, which were composed of 21 species of Cerambycidae, 9 species of Curculionidae, 2 species of Rhynchophoridae, and 13 species of Scolytidae. Parasitic or predatory insects were 35 species from 15 families in 6 orders. This study unveiled the ecological details of S. verustus, a parasitoid wasp parasitic to Monochamus alternatus andMonochamus saltuarius, the vectors of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, which causes pine wilt disease in Korea.

Changes in Major Insect Pests of Pine Forests in Korea Over the Last 50 Years

The history of the occurrence patterns and causes of outbreaks and declines of pests in Korean pine forests over the last 50 years are reviewed to determine a new management strategy for controlling forest pests to mitigate the decline of pine forests in Korea.

It is found that the nematodes are able to detect a factor from the pine chips that promotes their exit from the beetles and exit in greater numbers and at a higher frequency from beetles placed over pine chips than from beetles over distilled water.

Transmission of Bursaphelenchus Lignicolus (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) By Monochamus Alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

A total of 21 beetle species, all of which were associated with deteriorated pine trees, were examined for the presence of Bursaphelenchus lignicolus, finding that M. alternatus plays an important role in the spread of the nematode and on associated wilt disease in pine forests.

It was confirmed that pine longicorn, Monochamus alternates, plays an important role as a vector of Bursaphelenchus lignicolus, and transmits Dauerlarven of the nematode into healthy pine trees via fed wound on twigs and branches mostly from the middle of May to the beginning of August, and to less extent thereafter.
