More than 1.2 million people die and as many as 50 million people are injured or disabled due to road traffic injuries (RTIs) every year worldwide. The lack of reliable data hinders efforts to describe the characteristics of the issue and prioritise prevention activities. The objective was to provide a snapshot of fatal and non-fatal RTI in Argentina. We used the methodology proposed by the Global Burden of Disease Injury Expert group. External causes of deaths with unknown codes were…
Road Traffic Deaths in Brazil: Rising Trends in Pedestrian and Motorcycle Occupant Deaths
TLDR
Vulnerable road users are contributing an increasing proportion of the road traffic fatalities in Brazil, andNationally, elderly pedestrians are at particularly high risk and motorcycle fatalities are increasing at a rapid rate.
The toll of traffic-related fatalities in a metropolitan Italian area through the experience of the Department of Legal Medicine
TLDR
The study presents data and medico-legal issues behind traffic deaths in Milan between 2001 and 2012 and shows a downward trend in traffic-related fatalities was evident, but the toll is still high.

  • Political Science
Revista panamericana de salud publica = Pan American journal of public health

TLDR
A significantly positive level of autocorrelation is revealed in Argentina and the formation of groupings is identified by calculating local indicators of spatial association at the national level.
Vulnerable road-user deaths in Brazil: a Bayesian hierarchical model for spatial-temporal analysis
TLDR
Spatial analyses accounting for socio-economic factors showed that the central and northeastern microregions of Brazil are hotspot areas for fatal injuries among motorcyclists while the southern areas are for pedestrians.
The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network: a decade of research capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income countries
TLDR
The work that RTIRN has done over more than a decade is presented, including production of a dozen scientific papers, support of nearly 100 researchers, training of nearly 1,000 people and 35 scholarships granted to researchers from LMICs to attend world conferences, as well as lessons learnt and future challenges to maximize its work.
[Spatial variations in motorcycle registrations and the mortality of motorcycle users due to traffic injuries in Argentina].
  • C. Leveau
  • Environmental Science
    Salud colectiva
  • 2013
TLDR
Overall, there was a spatial relationship between motorcycle registrations and the mortality of the users of these vehicles in the northern-central region of Argentina and the need to reinforce primary prevention policies focused on motorcycle users in this region of the country, especially in areas with high population density.
Residence place as a risk factor in different types of fatal car accidents
TLDR
The results obtained in this study indicate the need to develop differential primary prevention policies by place of residence of car occupants, focusing on Patagonia non-resident drivers and by emphasising non-collision accidents.
Geospatial and environmental analysis of road traffic accidents in the city of Resistencia, Argentina.
TLDR
This study shows the city of Resistencia to be in a situation of urban vulnerability due not only to its socioeconomic status but also to the unequal development compared to neighboring cities, a reality that fosters an unfavorable environment.

TLDR
Young adult males are the demographic at the highest risk in non-fatal crashes, but the elderly have the highest road death rates primarily due to pedestrian crashes.
Building national estimates of the burden of road traffic injuries in developing countries from all available data sources: Iran
TLDR
While young adults are at high risk in non-fatal crashes, the elderly have the highest total death rates, largely due to pedestrian crashes, while motorised two-wheeler riders dominate hospital admissions, outpatient visits and health burden in Iran.

TLDR
NFRTI are frequent in Mexico and they are concentrated among men in productive ages in urban areas; they are associated with socioeconomic status at the individual level and with the state's development at the population level.
Estimating the incidence of road traffic fatalities and injuries in Sri Lanka using multiple data sources
TLDR
It is estimated that in the year 2005, approximately 2300 people died in Sri Lanka due to road traffic crashes, approximately 300,000 were injured in non-fatal crashes and approximately 140,000 received care for their injuries at hospitals.
Methods for developing country level estimates of the incidence of deaths and non-fatal injuries from road traffic crashes
TLDR
Methods are proposed for making these consistent and extrapolating to estimates of injury incidence at the country level by piecing together data from a wide array of sources that include death registers, hospital records, funeral records, health surveys and police reports.
