Advances in high speed networking and the convergence of operating systems on UNIX and variants, now allows the resources of the four NSF Supercomputer Centers to be considered by remote users, for many purposes, as a single distributed resource. This article will explore the genesis of the concept and why it is a precursor to the National Information Infrastructure.
