Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI; Emmons, 1984) factors were correlated with Splitting, Self-Consciousness, Depression, Anxiety, and Self-Esteem. Exploitativeness/Entitlement was largely maladaptive, whereas Leadership/Authority, Superiority/Arrogance, and Self-Absorption/Self-Admiration yielded ambiguous outcomes. Partialing out Exploitativeness/Entitlement uncovered stronger ties of the other factors with adjustment, and controlling for the other three dimensions caused…

Narcissism and Object Relations

Zero-order and partial correlational data were congruent with Kohut's hypothesis that self-grandiosity can include elements of both “pathology” and relative mental health, but canonical correlations did not support Kohuts' claim that narcissism can be described in a bidimensional self-structure.

A Glimpse Behind the Mask: Facets of Narcissism and Feelings of Self-Worth

This study examined the connections that the facets of narcissism captured by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory and the Pathological Narcissism Inventory have with self-esteem to suggest that it is important to consider specific facets of narcissisticism when examining feelings of self-worth rather than relying on broader composite measures of narcissistic personality features.

On the Meaning and Measure of Narcissism

The studies show that measures of grandiosity and entitlement interact to predict scores on the NPI, controlling for gender, self-esteem, and basic personality, but also that grand Curiosity and entitlement function independently with respect to mental health and ethical misconduct.

What Does the Narcissistic Personality Inventory Really Measure?

The results suggest that researchers interested in the psychological and behavioral outcomes associated with the NPI should examine correlates at the facet level and propose a hierarchical model for the structure of the N PI.

Narcissism and the Self as Continuum: Correlations with Assertiveness and Hypercompetitiveness

In a sample of 596 undergraduates, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) and its factors were correlated with self-esteem, assertiveness, and hypercompetitiveness. In zero-order data,

Self-Reported Narcissism and Perfectionism: An Ego-Psychological Perspective and the Continuum Hypothesis

Within Rothstein's ego-psychological framework, the pursuit of perfection is central to self-esteem regulation along a narcissistic spectrum of self-functioning [1]. In a test of this perspective,

Narcissism, self-esteem, and parental nurturance.

Results support recent suggestions that narcissism must be conceptualized within frameworks that include healthy self-esteem, and indicate that at least some data for the more adaptive aspects of narcissism were mediated by healthier self-functioning.

Preliminary Validation of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory–Juvenile Offender

An examination of the relationship between self-esteem and delinquent behavior in juveniles suggests that pathological narcissism, characterized by a grandiose self-image and interpersonal

Narcissism: theory and measurement.

The Exploitiveness/Entitlement subscale was found to correlate with measures of pathological narcissism and affective intensity and variability and the relevance of Linville's (1982) theory of self-complexity-affect intensity for understanding aspects of narcissism is outlined.

A Narcissistic Personality Inventory

The immediate stimulus for developing a test of narcissism was the inclusion of a new category, the narcissistic personality disorder, in the diagnostic manual (DSM-111) being prepared by the

An MMPI description of the narcissistic personality.

A profile analysis of the high NPI scorers suggest that a 98/89 MMPI profile with an elevated F score is most representative of the narcissistic personality in nonclinical samples.

Narcissism and empathy: validity evidence for the Narcissistic Personality Inventory.

Three empathy questionnaires were correlated with scores on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), and the predicted negative relationship was observed in two of the three cases, which support the construct validity of the NPI in general and of the Exploitiveness/Entitlement subscale in particular.

Narcissism, sex roles, and self-functioning

This study examined the relationship between gender, sex role, and narcissism. Two hundred and three students completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, and the

Results further the search for a reliable, valid, and easily administered test for NPD while leaving open the question of the relationship between this syndrome and concern with self-presentation.

Relationship between Narcissism and Sensation Seeking

This study investigated the relationship between narcissism and sensation seeking. It was hypothesized that a positive relationship would be found between the two personality variables.

Social Interest, Loneliness, and Narcissism

The results suggest that narcissism does tend to go with deficient social interest, and the predicted relationship between narcissism and loneliness was nonsignificant, although in the expected direction.

Androgyny as synthetic narcissism: Sex role measures and Kohut's psychology of the self

In Kohut's analysis of narcissism, the self emerges as a bipolar structure characterized by grandiosity at one pole and dependency at the other. Through appropriate developmental processes,

Assertiveness and narcissism.

Scores on the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) were positively related to measures of healthy narcissism and inversely related to empathic distress, anxiety, and depression. Partial correlational
