The wings of the giant wasp Megascolia procer javanensis are opaque and iridescent. The origin of the blue-green iridescence is studied in detail, using reflection spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and physical modeling. It is shown that the structure responsible for the iridescence is a single homogeneous transparent chitin layer covering the whole surface of each wing. The opacity is essentially due to the presence of melanin in the stratified medium which forms the mechanical core…

An epicuticular multilayer reflector generates the iridescent coloration in chrysidid wasps (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae)

Using scanning electron microscopy, reflectance spectral analysis, and theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that the dorsal abdominal cuticle of the chrysidid wasp Hedychrum rutilans has an epicuticular multilayer reflector consisting of six lamellae with a thickness of 185 nm each.

Iridescence: a functional perspective

Despite the vast amount of recent work on animal iridescence, a review reveals that many proposed functions of iridescent coloration remain virtually unexplored, and this area is clearly ripe for future research.

How Nature Produces Blue Color

Today, blue is a very fashionable color in European countries. This has not always been the case (Pastoureau, 2000), as cultural perceptions have slowly evolved since prehistoric times. In cave
