Abstract The intermetallic compound Zr 3 Al is severely deformed by the method of repeated cold rolling. By X-ray diffraction it is shown that this leads to amorphization. TEM investigations reveal that a homogeneously distributed debris of very small nanocrystals is present in the amorphous matrix that is not resolved by X-ray diffraction. After heating to 773 K, the crystallization of the amorphous structure leads to a fully nanocrystalline structure of small grains (10–20 nm in diameter) of…

TEM analysis of deformation induced dynamic nanocrystallization in an amorphous CoTi alloy
Nano-sized crystals in an amorphous matrix are considered to change the mechanical properties of an amorphous alloy. Therefore, it is of special interest to manipulate and control both the size and
Microstructure Evolution of Ni-Co Alloys During Crystallization and Amorphization Process
A molecular dynamics simulation has been conducted in Ni73Co27 and Ni74Co26 alloys during rapid solidification at the cooling rate of 1 × 1012 K/s. It indicates that two phase transitions occur with
Effect of Sc and Zr Additions on Recrystallization Behavior and Intergranular Corrosion Resistance of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu Alloys
The stronger effect of coherent Al3(Sc1−xZrx) phases on pinning dislocation resulted in a lower degree of recrystallization in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Sc-Zr alloy, while the subgrain boundaries can escape from the pinning of Al3Zr phases and merge with each other, bringing about a higher degree of recall.

High Pressure Torsion of Intermetallic Zr3Al
The L12-structured intermetallic compound Zr3Al can be rendered amorphous easily by several techniques. In the present study the structural evolution during high pressure torsion (HPT) was
Heterogeneous Process of Disordering and Structural Refinement in Ni3Al during Severe Plastic Deformation by High-Pressure Torsion
The process of grain refinement in Ni 3 Al by high-pressure torsion (HPT) was investigated up to 100 turns. The entire diametric sections of the deformed samples were analyzed by optical microscopy
Effect of Nanocrystallization and Twinning on Hardness in Ni3Al Deformed by High-Pressure Torsion
Samples of Ni3Al intermetallic compound were subjected to deformation by high-pressure torsion (HPT). The plastically-deformed structure revealed a bimodal character: coarse grains, retaining a

Synthesis of Bulk Nanocrystalline Materials and Bulk Metallic Glasses by Repeated Cold Rolling and Folding (RCR)
Repeated cold rolling with intermediate folding (RCR) represents a technique to obtain severe plastic deformation that avoids excessive heating at the internal interfaces and that proceeds without
Electron microscopy of severely deformed L12 intermetallics
Severe plastic deformation (SPD) can be used to make bulk, nanostructured materials. Three L12 long-range ordered (LRO) intermetallic compounds were studied by TEM methods. The superlattice glide
Enthalpies of formation and crystallization of amorphous Zr1-xAlx and Zr1-xNix alloys: calculations compared with measurements
The enthalpies of formation of amorphous Zrl_~Mx and Zrl_xNix alloys have been calculated based on CALPHAD data and compared with experimentally determined values. A direct extrapolation of the
