lunch and dinner. My grandmother, Alice Duer James, was everyone’s “Nana.” Her doors were open all day to her own grandchildren and to all of their playmates. What was available to her grandchildren was equally accessible to the other neighborhood children: bathrooms, cold drinks, the contents of her cupboards and refrigerator—nothing was off limits.
