Increasing the by-pass ratio of turbofans was successful in the past decades to increase the propulsive efficiency. The ultimate in this sense is the Contra-Rotating Open-Rotor (CROR) which offers a potential of 20% fuel burn reduction relative to classical turbofan engines in service today.
