We identify a new class of novae characterized by the post-eruption quiescent light curve being more than roughly a factor of 10 brighter than the pre-eruption light curve. Eight novae (V723 Cas, V1500 Cyg, V1974 Cyg, GQ Mus, CP Pup, T Pyx, V4633 Sgr, and RW UMi) are separated out as being significantly distinct from other novae. This group shares a suite of uncommon properties, characterized by the post-eruption magnitude being much brighter than before eruption, short orbital periods, long…

Accurate pre- and post-eruption orbital periods for the dwarf/classical nova V1017 Sgr
- Physics
- 2017
V1017 Sgr is a classical nova (in 1919) that displayed an earlier dwarf nova eruption (in 1901), and two more dwarf nova events (in 1973 and 1991). Previous work on this bright system in quiescence…
Nova multiwavelength light curves: predicting UV precursor flashes and pre-maximum halts
- Physics
- 2014
The dramatic brightenings of classical novae have yielded rich data sets of detailed light curves. Modelling these light curves is a challenge for any theory of classical novae. We have used our…
Life after eruption – V. Spectroscopy of eight candidate old novae with Gemini-South
- Physics
- 2015
We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data on eight candidates for post-nova systems. Five post-novae, V528 Aql, HS Sge, BS Sgr, GR Sgr and V999 Sgr, are successfully recovered. We…
The 2019 Outburst of the 2005 Classical Nova V1047 Cen: A Record Breaking Dwarf Nova Outburst or a New Phenomenon?
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2022
We present a detailed study of the 2019 outburst of the cataclysmic variable V1047 Cen, which hosted a classical nova eruption in 2005. The peculiar outburst occurred 14 yr after the classical nova…
A Self-consistent Model for a Full Cycle of Recurrent Novae—Wind Mass-loss Rate and X-Ray Luminosity
- Physics
- 2017
An unexpectedly slow evolution in the pre-optical-maximum phase was suggested in the very short recurrence period of nova M31N 2008-12a. To obtain reasonable nova light curves we have improved our…
IM Normae: The Death Spiral of a Cataclysmic Variable?
- PhysicsThe Astrophysical Journal
- 2022
We present a study of the orbital light curves of the recurrent nova IM Normae since its 2002 outburst. The broad “eclipses” recur with a 2.46 hr period, which increases on a timescale of 1.28(16) ×…
The symbiotic recurrent nova V3890 Sgr: binary parameters and pre-outburst activity
- Physics
- 2021
We present and analyze optical photometry and high resolution SALT spectra of the symbiotic recurrent nova V3890 Sgr at quiescence. The orbital period, P = 747.6 days has been derived from both…
THE NOVA SHELL AND EVOLUTION OF THE RECURRENT NOVA T PYXIDIS
- Physics
- 2009
T Pyxidis (T Pyx) is the prototypical recurrent nova (RN), with five eruptions from 1890 to 1967 and a mysterious nova shell. We report new observations of the nova shell with the Hubble Space…
Novae heat their food: mass transfer by irradiation
- Physics
- 2021
A nova eruption irradiates and heats the donor star in a cataclysmic variable to high temperatures )irr, causing its outer layers to expand and overflow the Roche lobe. We calculate the donor’s…
T Pyxidis: death by a thousand novae
- Physics
- 2017
We report a 20-year campaign to track the 1.8 hour photometric wave in the recurrent nova T Pyxidis, using the global telescope network of the Center for Backyard Astrophysics. During 1996-2011, that…

The decline and fall of classical novae
- Physics
- 1985
We address questions concerning the evolution of classical nova systems through outburst and the time scale for the return to their preoutburst state. Observations indicate that evolution on a purely…
General Properties of Quiescent Novae
- Physics
- 2002
The observed properties of novae before and after eruption are discussed. The distribution of orbital periods of novae shows a concentration near 3.2 h, which resembles that of magnetic cataclysmic…
The enigma of the oldest ‘nova’: the central star and nebula of CK Vul
- Physics
- 2007
CK Vul is classified as, amongst others, the slowest known nova, a hibernating nova, or a very late thermal pulse object. Following its eruption in AD 1670, the star remained visible for 2 years. A…
THE BEHAVIOR OF NOVAE LIGHT CURVES BEFORE ERUPTION
- Physics
- 2009
In 1975, E. R. Robinson conducted the hallmark study of the behavior of classical nova light curves before eruption, and this work has now become part of the standard knowledge of novae. He made…
Detection of supersoft X-ray emission from GQ Muscae nine years after a nova outburst
- PhysicsNature
- 1993
GQ MUS (Nova Muscae 1983) was the first classical nova from which X-rays were detected during outburst1'2. Those Exosat observations were consistent with thermonuclear burning on the surface of a…
Two Galactic Supersoft X‐Ray Binaries: V Sagittae and T Pyxidis
- Physics
- 1998
We discuss the nature of V Sagittae and T Pyxidis, two enigmatic blue variable stars commonly classed among the cataclysmic variables. These stars have bolometric luminosities in the range (1–50) ×…
XMM-Newton Observations of Nova Sagittarii 1998
- Physics
- 2007
We report on X-ray observations of Nova Sagittarii 1998 (V4633 Sgr) performed with XMM-Newton at three different epochs, 934, 1083, and 1265 days after discovery. The nova was detected with the EPIC…
Classical Novae as a Probe of the Cataclysmic Variable Population
- Physics
- 2005
Classical novae (CNe) are the brightest manifestation of mass transfer onto a white dwarf (WD) in a cataclysmic variable (CV). As such, they are probes of the mass transfer rate, Ṁ, and WD mass, MWD,…
