In this paper we present new near infrared (NIR) imaging and spectroscopic data of the quasar 3C 48 and its host galaxy. The data were obtained with the ESO-VLT camera ISAAC. We report the first detection of the apparent second nucleus 3C 48A about 1 '' NE of the bright QSO nucleus in the NIR bands J, H, and K s. 3C 48A is highly reddened with respect to the host, which could be due to warm dust, heated by enhanced star formation or by interstellar material intercepting the rad io jet. In fact…

Near infrared imaging of the broad absorption line quasar BAL QSO 0134+3253

In this paper we present near infrared (NIR) imaging data of the host galaxy of the broad absorption line quasar (BALQ) at $z=2.169$, serendipitously found close to 3C 48 (Canalizo et al. 1998, AJ,

The Nature of Optical Features in the Inner Region of the 3C 48 Host Galaxy

The well-known quasar 3C 48 is the most powerful compact steep-spectrum radio-loud QSO at low redshifts. It also has two unusual optical features within the radius of the radio jet (~1''): (1) an

Molecular gas and continuum emission in 3C 48: evidence for two merger nuclei?

Received ; accepted Abstract. We present new interferometer observations of the CO(1-0) line and mm continuum emission from 3C48 — one of the nearest examples of a merger activating a quasar. Our new

A high-angular resolution study of the nuclear regions of quasar host galaxies with the NaCo simultaneous differential imager

A project aiming at the study of the emission line gas morphology in quasar host galaxies by means of adaptive-optics-assisted simultaneous narrow-band imaging of the line and continuum emission is

The radio counter-jet of the QSO 3C 48

We present multi- frequency radio observational results of the quasar 3C 48. The observations were carried out with the Very Large Array ( VLA) at five frequencies, 0.33, 1.5, 4.8, 8.4, and 22.5 GHz,

Kinematics of the parsec-scale radio jet in 3C 48

We present results on the compact steep-spectrum quasar 3C 48 from observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) and the

The Qso Hosts I Zw 1 and 3C 48: Prototypes of a Merger-Driven Quasar Evolution?

I Zw 1 and 3C 48 are two neighboring template objects at a later stage of the hypothesized merger-driven evolutionary sequence from ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) to quasi-stellar objects

A Sample of IRAS Infrared-selected Seyfert 1.5 Galaxies: Infrared Color α(60, 25)-dominated Eigenvector 1

The well-documented E1 relationships are first extended to infrared color α(60, 25) and flux ratio [O III]/Hβn by comparing emission-line properties to continuum properties in infrared wavelengths.

Feeding Monsters — A Study of Active Galaxies

We present new interferometric observations of the molecular gas distribution and kinematics in the nuclei of different active galaxies at high angular resolution and high sensitivity carried out

JHK Imaging and Photometry of Low Z QSOs and Radio Galaxy

We describe J,H,K deep imaging of 90 arcmin fields around 4 QSOs and one Radio galaxy at redshifts in the range 0.06 to 0.30, and show their images, luminosity profiles, and NIR 2-colour diagrams of

The nature of the galaxy around 3C 48

New images are presented of the QSO 3C 48 in line-free bands centered at 0.58, 0.77, and 2.1 microns and in a narrowband centered on the forbidden O III5007 line. Careful profile subtraction of the

3C 48: Stellar Populations and the Kinematics of Stars and Gas in the Host Galaxy

We present deep Keck LRIS spectroscopy of the host galaxy of 3C 48. Our observations at various slit positions sample the different luminous components near the quasar, including the apparent tidal

A disrupted radio jet inside the host galaxy of the quasar 3C48

THE nearby quasar 3C48 was the first to be optically identified1, and its redshift, z = 0.368 (ref. 2), was the second, after that of 3C2733, to be determined. Despite this pedigree, its detailed

Quasar host galaxy images from the Hubble Space Telescope Archive

ABSTRA C T We systematically searched the non-proprietary data in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Archive to identify low-redshift quasars that have been imaged with the Wide Field Planetary

Photometric studies of composite stellar systems. I - CO and JHK observations of E and S0 galaxies

Multiaperture infrared photometric observations of the central regions of 51 early-type galaxies and of the integrated light of five globular clusters are presented. These data are compared with

CO Emission in the Radio-Loud Quasar 3C 48

We have used the Owens Valley Millimeter Array to conduct a sensitive search for CO (1→0) emission in the radio-loud quasar 3C 48. An emission feature is detected (4 σ) at the redshift of the narrow

A Multi-particle model of the 3C 48 host

The first successful multi-particle model for the host of the well-known quasi-stellar object (QSO) 3C 48 is reported. It shows that the morphology and the stellar velocity field of the 3C 48 host

Ultraluminous infrared galaxies and the origin of quasars

An evolutionary connection between ultraluminous infrared galaxies and quasars is deduced from the observations of all 10 infrared galaxies with luminosities L(8-1000 μm) ≥ 10^(12) L⊙, taken from a

JHK standard stars for large telescopes: the UKIRT Fundamental and Extended lists

We present high-precision JHK photometry with the 3.8-m UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) of 82 standard stars, 28 from the widely used preliminary list known as the ‘UKIRT Faint Standards’, referred to
