The facilitative glucose transporter, GLUT4, mediates insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in adipocytes and muscles, and the participation of GLUT4 in the pathogenesis of various clinical conditions associated with obesity, visceral fat accumulation and insulin resistance has been proposed.
