Myostatin is a member of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta superfamily, known for its ability to inhibit muscle growth. It can also regulate metabolism and glucose uptake in a number of tissues. To determine the mechanism of myostatin's effect on glucose uptake, we evaluated its actions using choriocarcinoma cell lines that are widely used as models for placental cells. Protein and mRNA were determined using immunoblotting and RT-PCR/PCR, respectively. Glucose uptake was assessed by…

Myostatin inhibits proliferation and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in mouse liver cells.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that myostatin suppresses the proliferation of mouse Hepa-1c1c7 murine-derived liver cells by reducing the expression of the cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases that elicit G1-S phase transition of the cell cycle, which reveals a plausible mechanism by which circulatingMyostatin contributes to the diminished regenerative capacity of the liver and diseases characterized by liver insulin resistance.
Myostatin induces mitochondrial metabolic alteration and typical apoptosis in cancer cells
TLDR
A novel function of myostatin is revealed in regulating mitochondrial metabolism and apoptosis in cancer cells, suggesting that perturbation of mitochondrial metabolism is causally linked with subsequent apoptosis.
Myostatin inhibits glucose uptake via suppression of insulin‐dependent and ‐independent signaling pathways in myoblasts
TLDR
The data suggest that Mstn inhibits Glut4 expression and insulin‐induced Glut 4 integration into cytoplasmic membranes and glucose uptake and that these changes are mediated by direct insulin‐desensitizing effect and indirect suppression of AMPK activation.
Expression and function of myostatin in obesity, diabetes, and exercise adaptation.
TLDR
The purpose of this review was to summarize the work to date on the expression and function of myostatin in obesity, diabetes, and exercise adaptation.
Myostatin is localized in extravillous trophoblast and up-regulates migration.
TLDR
The results provide a base from which further in vitro investigations on myostatin's ability to modulate placental cell function can be made, and the effect of hisostatin treatment on placental cells is described for the first time.

TLDR
The present state of the understanding of the role of myostatin and the closely related growth factor growth/differentiation factor 11 on metabolism is described.
Placental expression of myostatin and follistatin-like-3 protein in a model of developmental programming.
TLDR
Maternal undernutrition during gestation results in the aberrant regulation of myostatin and FSTL3 in the placenta and skeletal muscle of subsequent generations, which may be a potential mediator of offspring phenotype.

Myostatin expression is increased by food deprivation in a muscle-specific manner and contributes to muscle atrophy during prolonged food deprivation in mice.
TLDR
The data are consistent with the hypothesis that MSTN is dispensable for the initial atrophy occurring in response to FD but attenuates the decrease in fast-twitch muscle mass during prolonged FD.

Myostatin is a human placental product that regulates glucose uptake.
TLDR
Myostatin is synthesized, released, and acts within the human placenta and contributes to placental glucose homeostasis and may be a therapeutic target in diseases ranging from placental insufficiency to diabetes in pregnancy.
Myostatin inhibits cell proliferation and protein synthesis in C2C12 muscle cells.
TLDR
Recruitment of recombinant myostatin proteins inhibit cell proliferation, DNA synthesis, and protein synthesis in C2C12 muscle cells, suggesting that mystatin may control muscle mass by inhibiting muscle growth or regeneration.
Myostatin, a Negative Regulator of Muscle Growth, Functions by Inhibiting Myoblast Proliferation*
TLDR
It is proposed that the generalized muscular hyperplasia phenotype observed in animals that lack functional myostatin could be as a result of deregulated myoblast proliferation.

TLDR
The findings suggest that the propeptide, follistatin, or other molecules that block signaling through this pathway may be useful agents for enhancing muscle growth for both human therapeutic and agricultural applications.
Glycaemic regulation of glucose transporter expression and activity in the human placenta.
Characterization of glucose transport and glucose transporters in the human choriocarcinoma cell line, BeWo.
TLDR
The findings indicate that BeWo cells express a facilitative glucose transport system with characteristics broadly similar to those reported in isolated human placental membrane vesicles and that they are likely to serve as a useful experimental system for studying the regulation of placental glucose transport and transporter expression.
Differential response to exogenous and endogenous myostatin in myoblasts suggests that myostatin acts as an autocrine factor in vivo.
TLDR
It is proposed that a mechanism exists that differentially regulates the bioavailability of endogenous and exogenousMyostatin to muscle cells, consistent with a model in which myostatin actions are exerted in vivo in an autocrine fashion.
Regulation of muscle growth by multiple ligands signaling through activin type II receptors.
TLDR
A potent myostatin inhibitor, a soluble form of the activin type IIB receptor (ACVR2B), is described, which can cause dramatic increases in muscle mass when injected into wild-type mice.
Role of serum myostatin during the lactation period.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that myostatin in serum acts on skeletal muscle and negatively regulates early postnatal muscle growth in the rat.
Myostatin, a transforming growth factor‐β superfamily member, is expressed in heart muscle and is upregulated in cardiomyocytes after infarct
TLDR
It is shown that myostatin mRNA and protein are not restricted to skeletal muscle, and that following myocardial infarction, mystatin expression is upregulated in the cardiomyocytes surrounding the infarct area, which could play an important role in cardiac development and physiology.
