The CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha (C/EBPalpha) protein is essential for proper lung and liver function and granulocytic and adipose tissue differentation. It was hypothesized that abnormalties in C/EBPalpha function contribute to the development of malignancies in a variety of tissues.
