The purpose of this study was to expand classic heart period analysis methods by techniques from ethnomusicology that explicitly take complex musical rhythm principles into consideration. The methods used are based on the theory of African music, the theory of symbolic dynamics, and combinatorial theory. Heart period tachograms from 192 24-h electrocardiograms of 96 healthy subjects were transformed into binary symbol sequences that were interpretable as elementary rhythmic (percussive…

Detecting cardiorespiratory Coordination by Respiratory Pattern Analysis of Heart Period Dynamics - the Musical rhythm Approach
TLDR
The coordination analysis presented here has an enormous advantage over those techniques depending on respiratory flow measurements, because the pattern technique requires only ECG recordings, and it is thus applicable over a longer period of time under daily life conditions.
Notating disfluencies and temporal deviations in music and arrhythmia
TLDR
It is proposed that the results of these pulse displacements can be treated as actual rhythms and represented accurately via a literal application of common music notation, which encodes proportional relations among duration categories, and figural and metric groupings.
SONIFICATION OF AUTONOMIC RHYTHMS IN THE FREQUENCY SPECTRUM OF HEART RATE VARIABILITY
TLDR
This poster presents some of the work currently being done at the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland on heart rate variability biofeedback with a real time auditory display that is linked via MIDI to a software sequencer with a VST virtual instrument library.
Heart rate dynamics and cardiorespiratory coordination in diabetic and breast cancer patients.
TLDR
When comparing metastasized and non-metastasized cancer patients, the discriminatory power of binary heart rate rhythmicity emerges: the histograms of 1-h intervals during night sleep with a predominance of cyclically recurrent phase locking patterns unveiled a clear transition from higher to lower cardiorespiratory coordination ratios and to a loss of coordination capability in metastasizing patients.
Regular heartbeat dynamics are associated with cardiac health.
TLDR
Analysis of short beat-to-beat patterns with respect to regularity leads to a considerable increase of information compared with spectral analysis or ApEn of heart-rate variations.
Entropies of short binary sequences in heart period dynamics.
Dynamic aspects of R-R intervals have often been analyzed by means of linear and nonlinear measures. The goal of this study was to analyze binary sequences, in which only the dynamic information is
Quantification of fetal heart rate regularity using symbolic dynamics.
TLDR
The results suggest that the development of the autonomic nervous system and the emergence of fetal behavioral states lead to increases in not only irregular but also regular heart rate patterns, which are associated with stochastic heart beat trains.
“Il flauto magico” still works: Mozart’s secret of ventilation
TLDR
It was found that there are two archetypes of ideally typical breathing behaviour in professional musicians that either drive the musical creation, performance and experience or are driven by the musical structure itself.
Entropy, entropy rate, and pattern classification as tools to typify complexity in short heart period variability series
TLDR
The proposed approach based on quantification of complexity allows a full characterization of heart period dynamics and the identification of experimental conditions known to differently perturb cardiovascular regulation.

Effects of perceived musical rhythm on respiratory pattern.
TLDR
The data advance the following hypothesis: musical rhythm can be a zeitgeber, with its ability to entrain respiration dependent on the strength of its signal relative to spurious signals from the higher neural centers that introduce noise into the central pattern generator.
Reproduction of musical rhythms by children, adult musicians, and adult nonmusicians

TLDR
Investigating factors influencing the ease of reproduction of short musical rhythms that reflect various organizational principles suggests that a prototypical temporal structure—that is, a regular beat with binary subdivisions—is functional in childhood.
Evidence of phase transitions in heart period dynamics
TLDR
The results show evidence of at least two dynamical regimes (phases) of heart period dynamics and a close but different functional relationship within the phases between RR interval and RR complexity and the separation between these regimes and the relatively sudden shift from one regime to the other suggest the existence of a phase transition with respect to waking and sleeping periods in terms of synergetics.

TLDR
Perception of auditory rhythmic structure appears to follow the same developmental process as the perception of visual spatial structure.

TLDR
The imitation of several periodically repeating simple temporal patterns consisting of two or more intervals varying in their duration ratios has been investigated and a "beat-based" model for the perception of temporal sequences is proposed.
Categorical perception of rhythmic patterns
SummaryIn this study the task of the subject is to identify a rhythm which is a member of a set of patterns interpolated between two rhythms: One rhythm in a 6/8 and the other in a 4/4 metrum. The
Beat to beat variability in cardiovascular variables: noise or music?
The Perception of Musical Rhythms
TLDR
A simple theory is proposed of how a listener may infer the rhythm of such a sequence by comparing the note lengths, and it is assumed that the listener forms an idea of the rhythm as the sequence unfolds, constructing and eliminating metrical hypotheses in the light of what he hears.
Die Bestimmung der Atemfrequenz aus der respiratorischen Sinusarrhythmie (RSA). Determination of Respiratory Rate on the Basis of Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia
TLDR
A novel procedure for extracting the respiratory rate from the ECG is introduced, and the results thus obtained are compared with those of a previously applied method, based on the determination of dominant peaks in the amplitude spectrum of a five-minute RR interval time series.
