SUMMARY This paper reviews the major intramuscular extracellular matrix (IM-ECM) structures (endomysium, perimysium and epimysium) and their possible mechanical contributions to muscle functions. The endomysium appears to provide an efficient mechanism for transmission of contractile forces from adjacent muscle fibres within fascicles.
