One goal of virus infection is to reprogramme the host cell to optimize virus replication. As part of this process, viral microRNAs (miRNAs) may compete for components of the miRNA/small interfering RNA pathway, as well as regulate cellular targets. Murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) has been described to generate large numbers of viral miRNAs during lytic infection and was therefore used to analyse the impact of viral miRNAs on the host-cell small-RNA system, as well as to check for sorting of…

Functional Analysis of a Crustacean MicroRNA in Host-Virus Interactions
TLDR
This study revealed a novel regulatory function for an invertebrate miRNA in host-virus interactions by targeting the viral early gene of WSSV early gene wsv477.
Specific Roles of MicroRNAs in Their Interactions with Environmental Factors
TLDR
An outline of the current knowledge about specific roles of miRNAs in their interactions with various EFs is proposed and the literatures detailing mi RNAs-EFs interactions in the context of various of diseases are analyzed.

Murine cytomegalovirus encodes a miR-27 inhibitor disguised as a target
TLDR
This virus–host interaction reveals a mode of miRNA regulation in which a mRNA directs the degradation of a miRNA, and it is speculated that RNA-mediated miRNA degradation could be a more general viral strategy for manipulating host cells.
Mouse Cytomegalovirus MicroRNAs Dominate the Cellular Small RNA Profile during Lytic Infection and Show Features of Posttranscriptional Regulation
TLDR
The identification and characterization of 18 viral miRNAs from mouse fibroblasts lytically infected with the murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) and polyuridylation of their 3′ end, coupled to subsequent degradation are observed.
Human Cytomegalovirus Infection Alters the Expression of Cellular MicroRNA Species That Affect Its Replication
TLDR
The key finding is that HCMV selectively manipulates the expression of some cellular miRNAs to help its own replication.
Post-transcriptional regulation of miR-27 in murine cytomegalovirus infection.
TLDR
This work reports the rapid down-regulation of miR-27a in multiple mouse cell lines as well as primary macrophages upon infection with the murine cytomegalovirus, and demonstrates that both miR -27a and mi-27b have antiviral activity against MCMV and both exert an antiviral function upon over-expression.
High-Resolution Profiling and Analysis of Viral and Host Small RNAs during Human Cytomegalovirus Infection
TLDR
Deep-sequencing analysis of small RNAs from infected human fibroblast cells found that HCMV-encoded miRNAs accumulate to ∼20% of the total smRNA population at late stages of infection, and this analysis led to improvements in viral miRNA annotations and identification of two novel H CMV miRN as well as novel forms of virus-derived smRNAs.
Roles and regulation of microRNAs in cytomegalovirus infection.
Virally induced changes in cellular microRNAs maintain latency of human cytomegalovirus in CD34⁺ progenitors.
TLDR
Latency-induced change in hsa-miR-92a results in an increase in expression of GATA-2 and subsequent increased expression of cellular IL-10, which aids the maintenance of latent viral genomes in CD34(+) cells, probably resulting from their increased survival.
Degradation of Cellular miR-27 by a Novel, Highly Abundant Viral Transcript Is Important for Efficient Virus Replication In Vivo
TLDR
Three mutant viruses no longer able to target miR-27a/b, either due to miRNA target site disruption or target site replacement, showed significant attenuation in multiple organs as early as 4 days post infection, indicating that degradation of miR/b is important for efficient MCMV replication in vivo.
Down-Regulation of a Host MicroRNA by a Herpesvirus saimiri Noncoding RNA
TLDR
Transient knockdown and ectopic expression of HSUR 1 demonstrate that it directs degradation of mature miR-27 in a sequence-specific and binding-dependent manner, which illustrates use of a ncRNA to manipulate host-cell gene expression via the miRNA pathway.
Suppression of MicroRNA-Silencing Pathway by HIV-1 During Virus Replication
TLDR
It is shown that type III RNAses Dicer and Drosha, responsible for miRNA processing, inhibited virus replication both in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from HIV-1–infected donors and in latently infected cells.
