A female dusky salamander (Desmognathus fuscusJ, uncovered while she was brooding her eggs. The mass of yolk provided by the female affects the size of the hatchling larvae. Female behaviors that affect yolk size (e.g., feeding behavior) are said to exert maternal effects on hatchling size.
