The mechanisms and driving forces for hepatic uptake of sulfate were investigated in basolateral (sinusoidal) rat liver plasma membrane vesicles. A transmembrane pH difference (pH 8.0 inside, 6.0 outside) stimulated sulfate uptake above equilibrium ("overshoot").
