Multi-filter images from the solar corona are used to obtain temperature maps which are analyzed using techniques based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) in order to extract dynamical and structural information at various scales. Exploring active regions before and after a solar flare and comparing them with quiet regions we show that the multiscale behavior presents distinct statistical properties for each case that can be used to characterize the level of activity in a region…

Proper orthogonal decomposition of solar photospheric motions.

Low-frequency oscillations dominate the most energetic POD modes (excluding solar rotation), and are characterized by spatial patterns with typical scales of about 3 Mm, which are associated to p-modes oscillations at frequencies of about 3000 microHz.

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Photospheric Turbulent Velocity Fields Using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

The spatio-temporal dynamics of the solar photosphere are studied by performing a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of line-of-sight velocity fields computed from high-resolution data coming from

Coronal Temperature Maps from Solar EUV Images: A Blind Source Separation Approach

Multi-wavelength solar images in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) are routinely used for analysing solar features such as coronal holes, filaments, and flares. However, images taken in different bands

Image Processing Techniques and Feature Recognition in Solar Physics

This review presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of image-processing techniques used in automated feature-detection algorithms applied to solar data, such as visualization of solar imagery, cataloguing, statistics, theoretical modeling, prediction, and forecasting.

Spatio-temporal analysis of solar activity: main periodicities and period length variations

Aims. The spatio-temporal dynamics of solar activity has been investigated by studying the main oscillations and the time evolution of the basic periods. Methods. The spatio-temporal behavior of the

SOLAR CORONA LOOP STUDIES WITH THE ATMOSPHERIC IMAGING ASSEMBLY. I. CROSS-SECTIONAL TEMPERATURE STRUCTURE

We present a first systematic study on the cross-sectional temperature structure of coronal loops using the six coronal temperature filters of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on the

Study of bi-orthogonal modes in magnetic butterflies

We present a bi-orthogonal decomposition of the temporal and latitudinal distribution of solar magnetic fields from synoptic magnetograms. Results are compared with a similar decomposition of the

An analysis of the vertical photospheric velocity field as observed by THEMIS

We propose the application of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis to the photospheric vertical velocity field obtained through the data acquired by the THEMIS telescope, to recover a

Wavelet transforms and their applications to MHD and plasma turbulence: a review

Wavelet analysis and compression tools are reviewed and different applications to study MHD and plasma turbulence are presented. We introduce the continuous and the orthogonal wavelet transform and

ON THE ACCURACY OF THE DIFFERENTIAL EMISSION MEASURE DIAGNOSTICS OF SOLAR PLASMAS. APPLICATION TO SDO/AIA. II. MULTITHERMAL PLASMAS

Differential emission measure (DEM) analysis is one of the most used diagnostic tools for solar and stellar coronae. Being an inverse problem, it has limitations due to the presence of random and
