The aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a presynaptic protein, has an important role in the etiology of Parkinson's disease. Oligomers or protofibrils adopting the cross-beta-sheet structure characteristic of fibrillating amyloid proteins are presumed to be the primary cytotoxic species.
