Significance Many children do not simply “outgrow” attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The disorder often persists and affects around one in 40 adults, presenting a major public health challenge. Defining the mechanisms that underpin this variable clinical outcome could stimulate novel approaches to boost recovery in ADHD.
