Abstract Multifunctional magnetic superhydrophobic carbonaceous (MSC) aerogel with hierarchically porous structures is successfully prepared via carbonization process using disposable cotton balls followed by surface-coating of Fe3O4 particles and post hydrophobic-modified treatment with long-chain silanes.
