The subventricular zone is one of the 2 germinal niches of the adult brain where neural stem cells (NSC) generate new neurons and glia throughout life. NSC behavior is controlled by the integration of intrinsic signals and extrinsic cues provided by the surrounding microenvironment, or niche. Within the niche, the vasculature has emerged as a critical compartment, to which both neural stem cells and transit-amplifying progenitors are closely associated.
