In this article we address specific inventory management decisions with transportation cost consideration in a multi-level environment consisting of a supplier-warehouse-retailers. We develop two models - namely, decentralized ordering model and centralized ordering model to investigate the effect of collective ordering by retailers on the total inventory cost of the system. A numerical study shows that the proposed model is robust and generates reasonable cost savings. The models have… Expand
Coordinated inventory replenishment and outsourced transportation operations
We consider a one-warehouse N retailers supply chain with stochastic demand. Inventory is managed in-house whereas transportation is outsourced to a 3PL provider. We develop analytical expressionsExpand
The Choice of Different Logistics Policies Considering Transportation and Inventory Costs in a Two-Echelon Distribution System
This paper presented a formal analysis for the alternative of logistics centralization and decentralization policy in a two-echelon distribution system. First, functions of transportation andExpand
Using truck-inventory-cost to obtain solutions to multi-period logistics models
A heuristic procedure is developed that determines the deployments of trucks to, and the consequent levels of inventory at, the second echelon thereby reducing the number of variables in the model and is shown to identify near optimal solutions for the entire distribution system in negligible computation time. The Problem of Optimal Delivery Sizes in the Logistics System of a Manufacturing Enterprise
The author developed a model of total costs for the distribution network and applied a computer program as a virtual model of the production company and its logistics system, which reproduces logistics processes on daily basis. Expand
Optimal transportation and business cycles in an integrated production-inventory model with a discrete credit period
Abstract This paper considers the impact of discrete trade-credit policy depending on the purchased quantity of raw-materials on an integrated multi-cycle production inventory system of aExpand
Integrated optimization of safety stock and transportation capacity
This paper considers a segment of a supply chain comprising an inventory and a transportation system that cooperate in the fulfillment of stochastic customer orders and shows that in inventory systems with order cycles longer than one period the opposite is true. Expand
Multi-objective inventory routing problem: A stochastic model to consider profit, service level and green criteria
The Inventory Routing Problem has been mainly studied in recent decades under an economic performance perspective. In this paper, we develop a multi-objective mathematical framework for the IRP toExpand
A Push Shipping-Dispatching Approach for High-Value Items: From Modeling to Managerial Insights
A real shipping-dispatching problem is considered in a three-level supply chain (plant, wholesalers, shops); an integer linear program is proposed and some managerial insights are given. Expand
A decision-making model for controlling logistics costs
A lack of understanding of logistics costs, particularly in terms of their integrity and interdependence, allows for the interests of individual departments within a company, which are not always inExpand
Effect of variable transportation and carbon emission in a three-echelon supply chain model
Several industries controls carbon emission during transporting products due to increased transportation for obtaining the best transportation way with reduced cost. This study considers aExpand

Model and algorithm of an inventory problem with the consideration of transportation cost
Based on the traditional economic order quantity (EOQ) formula, a modified EOQ model is set up and an algorithm for the model is presented and computational results verify the proposed model as well as the efficiency of the algorithm. Expand
Incorporating transportation costs into inventory replenishment decisions
This study demonstrates that straightforward freight rate functions presented in the literature can be incorporated into inventory replenishment decisions without compromising the accuracy of the decision. Expand
A lot-size model with discrete transportation costs
The classical Harris-Wilson inventory model does not explicitly account for the costs incurred in transporting goods from the supplier to the buyer. Either such costs are assumed to be fixed andExpand
A computational method of transport selection appropriate to the situation of delivery lateness and uncertainty is proposed and four sets of parameters are examined and it is found that the models indicate different choices of shipper in some cases. Expand
For a total cost model the typical inventory model can be easily extended to include relevant transport factors with a sensitivity analysis. The analysis provides the shipper with a cost structureExpand
Distribution Strategies that Minimize Transportation and Inventory Costs
This paper develops an analytic method for minimizing the cost of distributing freight by truck from a supplier to many customers. It derives formulas for transportation and inventory costs, andExpand
An Inventory Theoretic Model of Freight Transport Demand
Inventory theory makes possible a direct comparison of the four attributes on which mode selection is based and leads to a model of rational choice in transport demand, suitable for statistical estimation given adequate data. Expand
Economic lot size model for price-dependent demand under quantity and freight discounts
Abstract Previous studies have developed procedures which determine optimal lot size and selling price when demand depends on price and all-unit quantity discounts are offered. Further, recentExpand

Analyzing trade-offs between transportation, inventory and production costs on freight networks
The purpose of this paper is to determine optimal shipping strategies (i.e. routes and shipment sizes) on freight networks by analyzing trade-offs between transportation, inventory, and productionExpand
