Pure mechanical or assisted mechanical ventilation are life-saving treatments necessary in many scenarios in modern medicine. However, if conducted improperly, artificial ventilation can cause deleterious side effects for the patient, exacerbate prevailing respiratory disease, and ultimately trigger multi-organ failure.
