Background: Motivation in learning behaviour and education is well-researched in general education, but less in medical education. Aim: To answer two research questions, ‘How has the literature studied motivation as either an independent or dependent variable? How is motivation useful in predicting and understanding processes and outcomes in medical education?’ in the light of the Self-determination Theory (SDT) of motivation. Methods: A literature search performed using the PubMed, PsycINFO…

Determinants and outcomes of motivation in health professions education: a systematic review based on self-determination theory
TLDR
Motivation could be enhanced by changes in the educational environment and by an early detection of students’ characteristics and may support future health practitioners’ self-determined motivation and positively influence how they process information and their emotions and how they approach their learning activities.
Effect of changes to the formal curriculum on medical students' motivation towards learning: a prospective cohort study.

Curriculum changes were associated with increased motivation towards learning in Year 1, which persisted until Year 6, and students with the reformed curriculum scored significantly higher regarding autonomous and controlled motivation than those with the traditional curriculum.
How motivation affects academic performance: a structural equation modelling analysis
TLDR
In conclusion, RAM positively correlated with academic performance through deep strategy towards study and higher study effort and seems valid in medical education in subgroups such as males, females, students selected by qualitative and weighted lottery selection.
Motivation as a Predictor of Dental Students' Affective and Behavioral Outcomes: Does the Quality of Motivation Matter?

Changes in medical students’ motivation and self-regulated learning: a preliminary study
