Mother-offspring conflict in vervet monkeys, Cercopithecus aethiops, was studied in three different environments: a dry woodland habitat, a swamp habitat and captivity. Based on the rate at which mothers rejected their infants, and on the relative roles of mother and infant in maintaining contact, it was possible to rank the three environments in terms of the level of behavioural conflict between mother and offspring.
