Mosquitoes Feeding on Ectothermic Vertebrates: A Review and New Data
@inproceedings{Shine1976MosquitoesFO, title={Mosquitoes Feeding on Ectothermic Vertebrates: A Review and New Data}, author={Richard Shine}, year={1976} }
The literature on feeding by mosquitoes on ectothermic vertebrates is reviewed. Original observations of the feeding of Uranotaenia argyrotarsis on Rana daemelii on Cape York Peninsula are presented.

Feeding patterns revealed host partitioning in a community of frog‐biting mosquitoes
- Biology
- 2020
The biting behaviour of coexisting frog‐biting mosquito species associated with a tropical anuran community is investigated and resource partitioning is a critical component in competing species that coexist in a community.
Mosquitoes as a potential vector for the transmission of the amphibian chytrid fungus
- BiologyZoology and Ecology
- 2019
This is the first study to demonstrate that an insect host may be a mechanical vector of Bd and suggests that the role of mosquitoes in the dissemination and control of the fungus should begin to consider.
aCaRI ( ChelICeRaTa ) — PaRasITes OF RePTIles
- Biology
- 2012
A brief review of acari parasitizing reptiles (Reptilia) showed that acari may cause various diseases and debilitation in reptiles e.g. anemia, reduced activity or dermatitis what is very marked in captive collections of reptiles.
A Comparison of Two Generic Trap Types for Monitoring Mosquitoes Through an Annual Cycle in Tropical Australia
- Environmental ScienceJournal of the American Mosquito Control Association
- 2009
Although EVS CO2 traps outperformed CDC light traps for routine monitoring, the historical transition from the latter to the former is unlikely to have major consequences for the identification of community composition or detection of seasonal trends in key species.
Phylogeography and invasion history of Aedes aegypti, the Dengue and Zika mosquito vector in Cape Verde islands (West Africa)
- MedicineEvolutionary applications
- 2019
The results suggest that A. aegypti invaded Cape Verde at the beginning of the Holocene from West Africa, and a possible contribution to the genetic pool of the founding populations in the New World cannot be fully discarded.
Epidemic Disease and the Catastrophic Decline of Australian Rain Forest Frogs
- Environmental Science
- 1996
In the montane rain forests of eastern Australia at least 14 species of endemic, stream-dwelling frogs have disappeared or declined sharply (by more than 90%) during the past 15 years. We review…
Reptiles and Amphibians as Potential Reservoir Hosts of Chikungunya Virus.
- Environmental Science, BiologyThe American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene
- 2018
Results from this study add to those of other studies that have suggested a possible role for ectothermic vertebrates in the ecology of arbovirus maintenance and transmission in nature.

Arboviruses in Reptiles: Isolation of a Bunyamwera Group Virus from a Naturally Infected Turtle
- Biology
- 1973
A Bunyamwera group arbovirus was isolated from the blood of a naturally infected turtle, Trionyx spinifer emoryi, from South Texas. The virus could not be distinguished by neutralization tests from…
A Study of the Behaviour of the Mouth-Parts of Mosquitoes when taking up Blood from Living Tissue ; together with Some Observations on the Ingestion of Microfilariae.
- Medicine, Biology

A study of the Behaviour of the Mouth-Parts of Mosquitoes when Taking Up Blood from Living Tissue and some Observations on the Ingestion of Microfilariae are published.
Host preferences of Aedes trivittatus (Diptera: Culicidae) in central Iowa.
- BiologyThe American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene
- 1975
The vertebrate host preferences of A. trivittatus suggest a close association between this mosquito species and the eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) in central Iowa, and results indicate that the easterncottontails rabbit may be an important host for TVT virus in Iowa.
Host-feeding patterns of Culex (Melanoconion) and Culex (Aedinus) mosquitoes collected in Panama.
- Environmental ScienceJournal of medical entomology
- 1975
The host-feeding patterns of 6 CuleX (Melanoconion) and 1 Culex (Aedinus) mosquito species from Panama were studied and some individuals of these 4 species, especially C. dunni and C elevator, showed a strong preference for lizards.
NATURAL OVERWINTERING HOSTS OF THE VIRUS OF WESTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS.
- Biology, MedicineThe New England journal of medicine
- 1964
THE natural host (or hosts) for maintenance of the virus of Western equine encephalitis in nature during the winter months has not been definitely determined. Specific antibody has been demonstrated,…
Overwintering of Western Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus in Garter Snakes Experimentally Infected by Culex tarsalis
- MedicineProceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine
- 1962
Garter snakes were infected with western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus by the bites of experimentally infected Culex tarsalis and the use of fish tags proved satisfactory in assuring positive identification of individual snakes.
Overwintering of Western Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus in Experimentally Infected Garter Snakes and Transmission to Mosquitoes
- MedicineProceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine
- 1960
Garter snakes inoculated in September and November with Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus and caused to hibernate under simulated natural conditions demonstrate that snakes may serve as a natural overwintering mechanism for WEE virus.
Comparative Effects of the Blood of Different Species of Vertebrates on Egg-Production of Aëdes aegypti Linn.
- Biology, Medicine
- 1937
The object of these experiments was to determine whether there exist significant differences in the nutritive values of the blood of different species of warm- and cold-blooded vertebrates, when fed to Aedes aegypti, using egg-production as the criterion.
