The objective of this work is to provide a review of the mortality risk in dementia and potential influencing factors. In order to do so, studies on mortality in dementia based on population-based samples of the last 15 years published in PubMed, Web of Science and PSYNDEXplus were considered. Without exception, all types of dementia are associated with a considerably increased mortality risk. Moreover, the risk of death rises with advancing severity of the disorder. Often, a more favorable…

Predictors of Mortality in Dementia: The PRIME Study.
- Medicine, PsychologyJournal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD

It is confirmed that demographic and diagnostic features predict the survival of patients with dementia, and changes in dementia severity and functional impairment over time predict mortality independently of baseline levels, and provides further evidence for the higher mortality risk of patients taking antipsychotic medications.
Mortality in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment
- Medicine, PsychologyNeuroepidemiology
- 2007
An increased risk of death was found that was about 1.5 times higher for individuals with MCI when a cognitive performance of more than1.5 standard deviation below the mean of age- and education-matched controls was required and the criterion of a cognitive complaint was excluded.
Alzheimer ’ s disease and comorbidity : Increased prevalence and possible risk factors of excess mortality in a naturalistic 7-year follow-up

Patients with AD have a different pattern of co-morbidity, but die from the same diseases as other hospitalized patients, and preventive measures may be helpful to reduce the high risk and fatal consequences of undetected disease in AD.
Mortality after a Diagnosis of Dementia in a Population Aged 75 and Over in Spain
- MedicineNeuroepidemiology

Dementia is a major risk factor for death in advanced age, with the highest mortality rates in women, and moderate and severe dementia was associated with an increased mortality risk even after appropriate control of comorbid conditions.
Dementia-associated mortality at thirteen years in the NEDICES Cohort Study.
- Medicine, PsychologyJournal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD

Dementia intensity increases the mortality risk at ten years in the NEDICES Study as in other cohort studies, and factors associated with higher mortality in Cox proportional hazard models were older age, male gender, and comorbidity.
Mortality in dementia is predicted by older age of onset and cognitive presentation

It is suggested that for both older-onset dementia and younger-ONSet dementia, ‘new onset’ psychiatric symptoms precede the cognitive symptoms of a neurodegenerative process.
Early-Onset Dementia Is Associated with Higher Mortality

Dementia is a risk factor for death, especially in young patients the impact of dementia on mortality is high, and Alzheimer’s disease seemed to have the most benign course, with a fourfold increased mortality risk.
