OBJECTIVE To assess the outcome of patients who experienced treatment failure with antiretrovirals in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS Analysis of 11 antiretroviral therapy (ART) programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were used to define treatment failure.
