Keratoconus was first discriminated from other corneal ectatic diseases in 1854. Since that time the morphological characteristics of keratoconic progression have been invaluable in the diagnosis of the condition. The key clinical features used to identify keratoconus have remained essentially the same since the introduction of the slit-lamp biomicroscope.
