Irregular bleeding remains a common reason for the discontinuation of progestin-only contraception. The levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) has profound morphological effects upon the endometrium. Specific features are gland atrophy and extensive decidual transformation of the stroma.
