We present a comprehensive analysis of the shape of dark matter (DM) halos in a sample of 25 Milky Way-like galaxies in TNG50 simulation. Using an enclosed volume iterative method, we infer an oblate-to-triaxial shape for the DM halo with median T ≃ 0.24. We group DM halos into three different categories. Simple halos (32% of the population) establish principal axes whose ordering in magnitude does not change with radius and whose orientations are almost fixed throughout the halo. Twisted halos…

Inferring the Morphology of Stellar Distribution in TNG50: Twisted and Twisted-stretched Shapes

We investigate the morphology of the stellar distribution (SD) in a sample of Milky Way–like galaxies in the TNG50 simulation. Using a local in shell iterative method as the main approach, we

Spin Alignment of Dark Matter Halos: Fast Halos

We investigate the spin alignment of dark matter halos by considering a mechanism somewhat similar to tidal locking; we dub it tidal-locking theory (TLT). While tidal torque theory (TTT) is

Measuring the local dark matter density in the laboratory

Despite strong evidence for the existence of large amounts of dark matter (DM) in our Universe, there is no direct indication of its presence in our own solar system. All estimates of the local DM

On the Robustness of the Velocity Anisotropy Parameter in Probing the Stellar Kinematics in Milky Way–Like Galaxies: Takeaway from TNG50 Simulation

We analyze the velocity anisotropy of stars in real and energy space for a sample of Milky Way–like galaxies in the TNG50 simulation. We employ different selection criteria, including spatial,

Influence of the Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus on the Density Shape of the Galactic Stellar Halo Revealed by Halo K Giants from the LAMOST Survey

We present a study of the influence of the Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus (GSE) on the density shape of the Galactic stellar halo using 11,624 K giants from the LAMOST survey. Every star is assigned a

The twisted dark matter halo of the Milky Way

We analyse systems analogous to the Milky Way (MW) in the eagle cosmological hydrodynamics simulation in order to deduce the likely structure of the MW’s dark matter (DM) halo. We identify MW mass

The shapes and alignments of dark matter halos

We present measurements of the triaxial dark matter halo shapes and alignment correlation functions in the Millennium and Millennium-2 dark matter N-body simulations. These two simulations allow us

Mass and shape of the Milky Way’s dark matter halo with globular clusters from Gaia and Hubble

Aims. We estimate the mass of the inner (< 20 kpc) Milky Way and the axis ratio of its inner dark matter halo using globular clusters as tracers. At the same time, we constrain the distribution in

Dark matter halo shapes in the Auriga simulations

We present shape measurements of Milky Way–sized dark matter haloes at redshift z = 0 in a suite of 30 zoom simulations from the Auriga project. We compare the results in full magnetohydrodynamics

Internal and External Alignment of the Shapes and Angular Momenta of ΛCDM Halos

We investigate how the shapes and angular momenta of galaxy and group mass dark matter halos in a ΛCDM N-body simulation are correlated internally and how they are aligned with respect to the

The artemis simulations: stellar haloes of Milky Way-mass galaxies

We introduce the Assembly of high-ResoluTion Eagle-simulations of MIlky Way-type galaxieS (artemis) simulations, a new set of 42 zoomed-in, high-resolution (baryon particle mass of $\approx 2\times

The Effect of Gas Cooling on the Shapes of Dark Matter Halos

We analyze the effect of dissipation on the shapes of dark matter (DM) halos using high-resolution cosmological gasdynamics simulations of clusters and galaxies in the ΛCDM cosmology. We find that

Dark matter in the Milky Way II. The HI gas distribution as a tracer of the gravitational potential

Context. Gas within a galaxy is forced to establish pressure balance against gravitational forces. The shape of an unperturbed gaseous disk can be used to constrain dark matter models. Aims. We

On the stellar halo metallicity profile of Milky Way-like galaxies in the Auriga simulations.

A recent observational study of haloes of nearby Milky Way-like galaxies shows that only half (four out of eight) of the current sample exhibits strong negative metallicity ([Fe/H]) gradients. This

Galaxy-induced transformation of dark matter haloes

We use N-body/gasdynamical cosmological simulations to examine the effect of the assembly of a central galaxy on the shape and mass profile of its surrounding dark matter halo. Two series of
