Freemartins are XX/XY chimaeras that develop as a result of the fusion of the placental circulation of at least one male and one female fetus. Of 19 freemartin ewes, 13 had testis-like structures, seven of them in an abdominal position and six in an inguinal position. Histologically, their gonads had structures resembling seminiferous tubules and interstitial cells, and grossly, most had structures derived from the mesonephric ducts (vasa deferentia, epididymides and vesicular glands). The…
Occurrence of freemartinism in Santa Ines sheep
TLDR
Follicular structures, a uterine tubular portion, with marked agenesis and aplasia of the uterine tubes and in some portions of the horns, as well as other parts of paramesonephric structures, were noted in the ovaries.
Abnormal position of lymph nodes in a freemartin sheep.
TLDR
This is the first time, to the best of the authors' knowledge, that a case has been reported where lymph nodes have been found inside the scrotal sacs, and it is possible that these were the inguinal lymph nodes, trapped inside theScrotum during fetal growth and development.
Evidence for almost complete sex-reversal in bovine freemartin gonads: formation of seminiferous tubule-like structures and transdifferentiation into typical testicular cell types.
TLDR
Histological and immunohistochemical analyses of a rare case of a freemartin Japanese black calf with almost complete XX sexreversal found the transdifferentiation of ovarian somatic cells into all testicular somatic cell types in the XX freemartsin gonads, supporting the idea of a high sexual plasticity in the ovarian somatics cells of mammalian gonads.
Masculinization of the Distal Tubular and External Genitalia in Female Sheep With Prenatal Androgen Exposure
TLDR
Results show that prenatal exposure of female sheep to exogenous androgens results in masculinization of the tubular and external genitalia.
Clinical and cytogenetic studies in intersex ewes
TLDR
Nine Sarda x Lacaune ewes with intersexual characteristics and an infertility condition at the reproductive anamnesis were analysed and the diagnosis of freemartinism was confirmed for seven out of the nine subjects.

Sex chromosome chimerism and the freemartin syndrome in Rideau Arcott sheep
TLDR
The frequency of sex chromosome chimerism in Rideau Arcott sheep is estimated at 4.35%, with no significant effect of litter size and sex ratio, and as it was shown that opposite sex cells can migrate to tissues other than blood and be transcriptionally active in chimeric sheep, the role they can play is speculated.
Freemartinism: Three Cases in Goats
TLDR
A molecular and cytogenetic analysis of three cases of caprine freemartinism in goats revealed that all three animals had the SRY gene linked with the Y chromosome, which can create a basis for wider characterisation of this syndrome in the domestic goat.
Numerical Sex Chromosome Aberrations and Abnormal Sex Development in Horse and Sheep
TLDR
2 cases of abnormal sex development involving numerical sex chromosome aberrations in both horse and sheep with distinct heterosexual traits are reported on.

Freemartins in cattle: the first steps of sexual organogenesis.
TLDR
This covers the period of sexual organogenesis in males from the initial differentiation of the testes to the final establishment of most male structures and suggests that a factor of male origin which inhibits both the ovaries and the M\l=u"\llerianducts and which is distinct from the masculinizing hormone could be involved.

Studies on a sheep freemartin
TLDR
A case of intersexuality in a Dorset horn ewe, born in a set of triplets with one dead male fetus and one living male, was described and it was concluded that the animal was a freemartin.
Infertility due to bilateral ovarian hypoplasia in sheep homozygous (FecXI FecXI) for the Inverdale prolificacy gene located on the X chromosome.
TLDR
Ewes heterozygous (I+) for the Inverdale prolificacy gene (FecXI) located on the X chromosome have ovulation rates about 1.0 units higher than noncarrier ewes known to be I+ or noncarriers.
DISTRIBUTION OF Δ5-3β-HYDROXYSTEROID DEHYDROGENASE ACTIVITY IN THE GRAAFIAN FOLLICLE OF THE SHEEP

Ovarian hypoplasia in Lleyn ewes
TLDR
In an in vitro study bovine alveolar macrophages were pretreated for 30, 60 or 120 mins with an anti- inflammatory compound at several concentrations and it seems unlikely that anti-inflam- matory drugs will reduce the procoagulant activity of bovines alve- olar macrophage and the associated pulmonary fibrosis.
