“Morning sickness” is the common term for nausea and vomiting in early human pregnancy (NVP). Recent interest in why NVP occurs—that is, in the evolutionary costs and benefits of NVP—has spurred the development of two alternative hypotheses. The “prophylaxis,” or “maternal and embryonic protection,” hypothesis suggests that NVP serves a beneficial function by expelling foods that may contain harmful toxins and microorganisms and triggering aversions to such foods throughout pregnancy. The… Expand

Embryo quality: the missing link between pregnancy sickness and pregnancy outcome
TLDR
It is of interest that the food aversions most commonly associated with pregnancy sickness, to meat, dairy and seafoods, are also the chief dietary sources of iodine, and given that pregnancy sickness is closely linked to iodine intake and thyroid function, an obvious interpretation emerges. Expand
Adaptive Significance of Nausea and Vomiting in Early Pregnancy
TLDR
Nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy has thought to have some adaptive merits throughout the course of evolution, though researchers are still not entirely certain of the benefits of this process. Expand
The expression and adaptive significance of pregnancy-related nausea, vomiting, and aversions on Yasawa Island, Fiji☆
TLDR
It is found that 66% of these women experience nausea and/or vomiting in tandem with the development of aversions to certain foods, similar to what has been documented for industrialized populations, and the prevalence is close to the industrialized mean prevalence of 69%. Expand
Food Aversions and Cravings during Pregnancy on Yasawa Island, Fiji
TLDR
It is found that aversions focus predominantly on foods expected to exacerbate the challenges of pregnancy, and cravings focus on foods that provide calories and micronutrients while posing few threats to mothers and fetuses. Expand
What do we know about Food Cravings and Aversions during Pregnancy?
During pregnancy, it is very common for women to make changes in the choice of foods they eat and often experience cravings and aversions to certain foods. The purpose of this narrative review is toExpand
Parental precaution: Neurobiological means and adaptive ends
TLDR
The role of reproductive hormones in priming parental affiliation with young to incentivize offspring protection, focusing parental attention on cues of potential threat, and facilitating maternal defense against potentially dangerous conspecifics and predators is highlighted. Expand
Appetite Sensations and Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy: An Overview of the Explanations
TLDR
Two functional explanations about genetic predispositions and hormonal associations with appetite sensations and NVP are reviewed: the “maternal and embryo protection” and the ”placental growth and development” hypotheses. Expand
Prospects of a Longer Life Span beyond the Beneficial Effects of a Healthy Lifestyle
Life span is limited by the effects of diseases and ageing. For the aim of a longer life span, it is indispensable that a rational analysis of the primary causes of these phenomena is not limited toExpand
Pregnancy, Nausea and Vomiting
TLDR
A clear positive correlation between the presence of NVP and favorable pregnancy outcome has been demonstrated and any selective advantage to NVP in terms of such an effect is undemonstrated. Expand
The association of temperament with nausea and vomiting during early pregnancy
TLDR
The results suggest that women with a predominantly anxious temperament are more vulnerable to developing somatic complaints such as nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Expand

G gestational cravings target substances that may influence immune functioning and affect the availability of iron in the gastro-intestinal tract, thereby limiting the proliferation of iron-dependent pathogens. Expand
Morning Sickness: A Mechanism for Protecting Mother and Embryo
TLDR
The hypothesis that morning sickness protects the embryo by causing pregnant women to physically expel and subsequently avoid foods that contain teratogenic and abortifacient chemicals, especially toxic chemicals in strong-tasting vegetables, caffeinated beverages and alcohol is examined. Expand
Is morning sickness maladaptive
TLDR
The author claims that nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are ‘maladaptive sequelae’ of conflict between mother and embryo, and that the embryo triggers conflict (hence, NVP symptoms) by secreting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Expand
Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in an evolutionary perspective.
TLDR
Evidence is found that normal levels of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (excluding hyperemesis) protect pregnant women and their embryos from harmful substances in food, particularly pathogenic microorganisms in meat products and toxins in strong-tasting plants. Expand

Pregnancy sickness and embryo quality
TLDR
It is argued that NVP is not directly adaptive, but arises as a byproduct of genetic conflict between mother and embryo, and the negative correlation between first-trimester spontaneous abortion and NVP are not the result of protection of embryos from environmental mutagens or pathogens. Expand
THE NUTRITIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF PREGNANCY SICKNESS A Critique of a Hypothesis
The purpose of this paper is to assess Profet's (1992) and others' hypothesis that nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is adaptive. A number of studies have found an association between NVP and aExpand
Nutrient insult in early pregnancy
TLDR
Although NVP has been documented for thousands of years, its cause has not yet been satisfactorily elucidated, but seems to be related to endocrinological changes, thus favouring fetal growth when NVP resolves. Expand
The nutritional consequences of pregnancy sickness
TLDR
The results from the case study suggest that women who experience NVP do encounter nutritional consequences in the later stages of pregnancy and are more likely to experience poor pregnancy outcomes, suggesting that NVP may not be adaptive in all environmental settings, particularly among marginally nourished populations.
