Monoxenic culture of the anaerobic ciliate Trimyema compressum Lackey

Abstract

Sapropelic ciliates from anoxic mud samples were enriched and cultivated in monoculture together with natural food bacteria growing on cellulose. The ciliates lacked cytochrome oxidase and contained bluish fluorescent endosymbionts.
