In this paper we study several monotonicity axioms in approval-based multi-winner voting rules. We consider monotonicity with respect to the support received by the winners and also monotonicity in the size of the committee. Monotonicity with respect to the support is studied when the set of voters does not change and when new voters enter the election. For each of these two cases we consider a strong and a weak version of the axiom. We observe certain incompatibilities between the monotonicity…

This survey summarizes the current understanding of ABC rules from the viewpoint of computational social choice, with main focus on axiomatic analysis, algorithmic results, and relevant applications.

### Committee Scoring Rules: Axiomatic Characterization and Hierarchy

• Mathematics
ArXiv
• 2018
This work identifies several natural subclasses of committee scoring rules, namely, weakly separable, representation-focused, top-$k$-counting, OWA-based, and decomposable rules, and characterize SNTV, Bloc, and $k$--Courant as the only nontrivial rules in pairwise intersections of these classes.

### Proportionality and Strategyproofness in Multiwinner Elections

It is proved that no multiwinner voting rule can simultaneously satisfy a weak form of proportionality (a weakening of justified representation) and aweak form of strategyproofness in the domain of committee elections.

### Strategic Voting under Incomplete Information in Approval-Based Committee Elections

• Economics
• 2021
In approval-based committee elections, voters vote by submitting an approval ballot, which indicates which candidates the voter approves of, with the purpose of electing a fixed size committee.

### The expanding approvals rule: improving proportional representation and monotonicity

• Economics
Soc. Choice Welf.
• 2020
This paper presents a taxonomy of proportional representation axioms for general weak order preferences, some of which generalise and strengthen previously introduced concepts, and presents a rule called the expanding approvals rule (EAR) that satisfies properties stronger than the central PR axiom satisfied by STV.

### On the Complexity of Destructive Bribery in Approval-Based Multi-winner Voting

This paper explores the complexity of several destructive bribery problems under five prestigious approval-based multi-winner voting rules, and for NP-hard problems the authors study their parameterized complexity with respect to meaningful parameters.

### Approval-Based Apportionment

• Computer Science

• 2020
Using techniques from both apportionment and multiwinner elections, this work shows that core-stable committees are guaranteed to exist and can be found in polynomial time and demonstrates that extended justified representation is compatible with committee monotonicity.

• 2021
It is proved that tournaments with a static schedule and at least five players always include irrelevant matches, and dynamic schedules for an arbitrary number of players can be devised that avoid irrelevant matches.

This paper introduces the class of counting rules, provides an axiomatic characterization of this class and shows that counting rules are consistent, and axiomatically characterize three important consistent multi-winner rules: Proportional Approval Voting, Multi-Winner Approval voting and the Approval Chamberlin--Courant rule.

### Justified representation in approval-based committee voting

• Computer Science
MPREF@AAAI
• 2014
A natural axiom is proposed for approval-based committee voting, i.e. the setting where each voter approves a subset of candidates, and these votes are then used to select a fixed-size set of winners (committee), which is called justified representation ($$\mathrm {JR}$$JR).
