This review discusses confinement, as well as the topological and critical phenomena, in the gauge theories which provide the condensation of magnetic monopoles. These theories include the 3D SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model, the 4D [U(1)] N - 1 -invariant compact QED , and the [U(1)] N - 1 -invariant dual Abelian Higgs model. After a general introduction to the string models of confinement, an analytic description of this penomenon is provided at the example of the 3D SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model…

Effective String Description of the Confining Flux Tube at Finite Temperature

In this review, after a general introduction to the effective string theory (EST) description of confinement in pure gauge theories, we discuss the behaviour of EST as the temperature is increased.

Dual Superconductor Model of Confinement: Quantum-String Representation of the 4D Yang–Mills Theory on a Torus and the Correlation Length away from the London Limit

This paper is devoted to the dual superconductor model of confinement in the 4D Yang–Mills theory. In the first part, we consider the latter theory compactified on a torus, and use the dual

Fully Quantum String Representation of a Wilson Loop in the Finite-Temperature 3D Yang-Mills Theory

It is demonstrated that at a temperature which is roughly twice smaller than the deconfinement critical temperature, the value of the coupling of that term becomes such that the string conformal anomaly cancels out, thereby admitting a fully quantum description of the quark–antiquark string in 3D rather than 26D.

On the Temperature Dependence of the String-Breaking Distance in QCD

The temperature dependence of the QCD string-breaking distance is evaluated in terms of the string tension and the rate of production of light mesons in the chromo-electric field of a flux tube. As a

k-string tensions in the 3-d SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model

The classic argument by Polyakov showing that monopoles produce confinement in the Higgs phase of the Georgi-Glashow model is generalized to study the spectrum of k-strings. We find that the

Confining strings in the Abelian-projected SU(3)-gluodynamics II. 4D case with θ-term

The generalization of 4D confining string theory to the SU(3)-inspired case is derived. It describes string representation of the Wilson loop in the SU(3) analogue of compact QED extended by the

Dynamics of SU(N) supersymmetric gauge theory

k-string tensions in the 4-d SU(N)-inspired dual abelian-Higgs-type theory

The k-string tensions are explored in the 4-d [U(1)]N−1-invariant dual abelian-Higgs-type theory. In the London limit of this theory, the Casimir scaling is found in the approximation when

Quark confinement and topology of gauge theories

Confining membranes and dimensional reduction

The dual theory describing the 4D Coulomb gas of point-like magnetically charged objects, which confines closed electric strings, is considered. The respective generalization of the theory of

Confining properties of Abelian-projected theories

Abstract. Representations of the Abelian-projected SU(2) and SU(3) gluodynamics in terms of the magnetic monopole currents are derived. Besides the quadratic part, the obtained effective actions

Higgs-inspired corrections to the RG flow in the finite-temperature 3D Georgi-Glashow model and its SU(N)-generalization

The Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) RG flow in the ensemble of monopoles existing in the finite-temperature (2+1)D Georgi-Glashow model is explored in the regime when the Higgs field is not
