The hundredth anniversary of the events in Tereng Valley that laid the foundation for the religious reform movement known in history as Burkhanism was celebrated in June 2004 in the Altai Republic. Along with the scholarly community of Altaians, various public and, especially, religious associations prepared for this anniversary, representing a broad confessional spectrum—from shamanism and neoshamanism to Buddhism. In the early 1990s, in the course of the Altai national cultural revival that had strengthened by that time (to be more precise, we should probably call it a national cultural revitalization), many organizations appeared whose objective was the development of Altai spirituality. The Ak Burkhan (White Burkhan) association of Altai Buddhists was legally registered in 1992, although it formed and began its operation in 1991.
