The ascomycete genus Taphrina Fries comprises nearly 100 species recognized by their mycelial states when parasitic on different vascular plants. Whereas the filamentous state is strictly phytoparasitic, the yeast state is saprobic and can be cultured on artificial media. Taphrina species are differentiated mainly on the basis of host range and geographical distribution, type and site of infection and morphology of the sexual stage in infected tissue. However, there has been little progress in…

Phenotypic and genotypic identification and phylogenetic characterisation of Taphrina fungi on alder
TLDR
European species of Taphrina on Alnus species (Betulaceae) were identified using morphological, physiological and molecular characteristics, the latter including determination of PCR fingerprints and of nucleotide sequences from selected nuclear ribosomal DNA regions to clarify phylogenetic relationships.
The reassignment of three 'lost' Taphrina species (Taphrina bullata, Taphrina insititiae and Taphrina rhizophora) supported by the divergence of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.
TLDR
The host range, the divergence of the 26S rRNA gene sequence, internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (rns) sequence strongly support their reassignment as species.
Direct detection of Taphrina deformans on peach trees using molecular methods
TLDR
Positive and specific diagnoses of peach leaf curl were achieved with primer TDITS1, using PCR-detection, and probe TDE634, using FISH, both on infected leaves and in washings of asymptomatic peach buds.
Disentangling identity of species of the genus Taphrina parasitizing herbaceous Rosaceae, with proposal of Taphrina gei-montani sp. nov.
TLDR
Five strains of a novel parasitic yeast belonging to the genus Taphrina were isolated from leaf tissues of Geum montanum L. (Rosaceae), collected from the Vysoké Tatry Mountains, Slovakia and genetic analyses revealed that these isolates differ by 15 unique substitutions in the ITS region and by six substitution in the rns gene from all other species of the genusTaphrina analysed hitherto.
Description of Taphrina antarcticaf.a. sp. nov., a new anamorphic ascomycetous yeast species associated with Antarctic endolithic microbial communities and transfer of four Lalaria species in the genus Taphrina
TLDR
This is the first record for this genus in Antarctica; since plants are absent on the continent, it is hypothesize that the fungus may have focused on the saprotrophic part of its life cycle to overcome the absence of its natural host and adapt environmental constrains.
The isolation and characterization of Taphrina betulina and other yeasts residing in the Betula pendula phylloplane
TLDR
To explore the local infection ecology of T. betulina, isolated yeasts from the phylloplane of birch, using three classes of samples; from infected symptom bearing leaves inside brooms, healthy leaves from branches away from brooms on broom bearing trees, and symptom- free leaves from symptom-free trees.
Comparative Genomics of Taphrina Fungi Causing Varying Degrees of Tumorous Deformity in Plants
TLDR
The genomes of four Taphrina species, which parasitize Prunus, Cerasus, and Populus hosts with varying severity of disease symptoms, are sequenced and it is revealed that these fungi may utilize multiple strategies in coping with the host environment.

Evolutionary relationships of membrers of the generaTaphrina, Protomyces, Schizosaccharomyces, and related taxa within the archiascomycetes: Integrated analysis of genotypic and phenotypic characters
TLDR
All the trees show that, within the archiascomycete lineage, 11 of the 14Taphrina species and the 2Protomyces species are monophyletic, and the evidence from molecular and phenotypic characters such as cell wall sugar composition, ubiquinone, cell wall ultrastructure, and mode of conidium ontogeny, strongly suggests that ‘T’.39 should be excluded from the archiacomyCete lineage.

TLDR
The detailed differences among the mitotic systems of the true Taphrina species suggest that the genus as a whole is polyphyletic but undoubtedly ascomycetous.

TLDR
The predominance of mannose in the cell wall — otherwise only known from ascomycetous yeasts –, a type A secondary structure of 5S rRNA, a simple unifactorial mating system in all parasitic smut species suggest that the Microbotryum-type might be ancestral to the Ustilago-type.

Comparison of AFLP fingerprints and ITS sequences as phylogenetic markers in Ustilaginomycetes
TLDR
The abundance of polymorphisms makes the AFLP technique more suitable to distin- guish organisms in clusters of closely related species and at the isolate level, and the fungal phylogenetic relationships were not in disagreement with the ITS-derived tree.

Ascomycetous Yeasts and Yeastlike Taxa
TLDR
Breadmaking and brewing are so common that mention of these processes immediately brings Saccharomyces cerevisiae to mind, but the ascomycetous yeasts are a phylogenetically diverse group and numerous other species also markedly impact human activities.
