Abstract The observed molecular properties of a sample of FIR-luminous and OH megamaser (OH-MM) galaxies have been investigated. The ratio of high and low-density tracer lines is found to be determined by the progression of the star formation in the system. The HCO+/HCN and HCO+/HNC line ratios are good proxies for the density of the gas, and PDR and XDR sources can be distinguished using the HNC/HCN line ratio. The properties of the OH-MM sources in the sample can be explained by PDR chemistry… Expand
Evolution of the ISM in luminous infrared galaxies
Aims. Molecules that trace the high-density regions of the interstellar medium may be used to evaluate the changing physical and chemical environment during the ongoing nuclear activity in (ultra-)Expand
Strong biases in infrared-selected gravitational lenses
Bright submillimetre-selected galaxies have been found to be a rich source of strong gravitational lenses. However, strong gravitational lensing of extended sources leads inevitably to differentialExpand
The multiphase environment in the centre of Centaurus A
We study the multiphase medium in the vicinity of the active galactic nucleus Centaurus A (Cen A). Combined high-resolution observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)Expand

Radio properties of FIR-megamaser nuclei
Aims. Radio data on the nuclear emissions have been used to characterize the dominant nuclear activity in a sample of FIR (ultra-) luminous galaxies and the subgroup of known OH Megamasers. ThisExpand
Diagnostics of irradiated gas in galaxy nuclei. I. A far-ultraviolet and X-ray dominated region code
We present a far-ultraviolet (PDR) and an X-ray dominated region (XDR) code. We include and discuss thermal and chemical processes that pertain to irradiated gas. An elaborate chemical network isExpand
Diagnostics of irradiated dense gas in galaxy nuclei. II. A grid of XDR and PDR models
Aims. The nuclei of active galaxies harbor massive young stars, an accreting central black hole, or both. In order to determine the physical conditions that pertain to molecular gas close to t heExpand
Shock enhancement of HCO
In the shocked gas associated with the supernova remnant IC 443, it is found that the HCO(+)/CO abundance is approximately 0.004. This is about 100 times greater than in the unshocked gas in thisExpand
What Powers Ultra-luminous IRAS Galaxies?
We present an ISO SWS and ISOPHOT-S, mid-infrared spectroscopic survey of 15 ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies. We combine the survey results with a detailed case study, based on near-IR and mm imagingExpand
Diagnostics of active galaxies I. Modeling the infrared properties of dusty cores of starburst galaxies
Aims. Despite extensive observations over the last decades, the central questions regarding the power source of the large IR luminosity of Ultra Luminous Infra Red Galaxies (ULIRGs), and theirExpand
